About me

I am an experienced psychotherapist and clinical supervisor to trainee counsellors and psychotherapists.

I work both online via Zoom and face to face at present. My therapy office is based in Llantwit Major CF61. I also offer EMDR online via a leading international platform RemotEMDR I work Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 09.30-17.30. I may work later on a Wednesday depending on client need and my availability.

I believe in working within a relational way to help you process, recover, heal and grow. Deep empathy and a non-judgemental approach are at the heart of my practice. I will value working with you every step of the way. My approaches stem from my core values as a person; relational, person-centred and compassionate to help you explore yourself and your relationship with others. You may feel like the same problems and relationship patterns keep repeating themselves, despite your best efforts to move on with your life. You may not be quite able to define exactly what you are feeling, or your emotions might seem overwhelming, as if you cannot understand or control them. This often involves experiencing deep sadness, sorrow, anger, shame and guilt.

I am trained in a variety of therapies including Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and other approaches. I am also experienced in working with people who have experienced PTSD and am a Europe accredited Eye Movement Desensitisation Re-processing (EMDR) psychotherapist.  I sometimes work with EMDR as an adjunct to Internal Family Systems (IFS or Parts work).  Whilst I have undergone certificate level training in couples therapy, I am unable to offer this at present.

I will work at a pace which suits you and for however long you need whether that be short term or open ended. I practice in a warm, relaxed and caring way, with my focus on you being in the driving seat to help you.

I receive monthly supervision in CBT, integrative counselling and EMDR via accredited supervisors to maintain my registrations and ensure my practice is within ethical guidelines and to ensure your safety. I also regularly attend CPD study days to ensure my practice is evidence based and current.

Further information

I have a long-standing career in mental health spanning more than 30 years initially as an adult nurse, then as a mental health nurse, chartered psychologist, researcher and academic in mental health and psychology.  I am in the process of re-applying for my practitioner psychologist registration with the Health Professions Council (registration lapsed in 2011).

I have worked with people experiencing a wide range of issues over these years from mild to severe and enduring mental health difficulties and have used a variety of different helping approaches under supervision.  I also work with the media to offer my expertise in different mental health areas related to research or clinical practice.  My published research as an academic has been in the areas of mental health, behaviour change and delivery of psychological interventions (under my previous name Huws-Thomas).

I am working online using Zoom and EMDR platforms as well as face to face in my comfortable office in Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan.
