About me

Welcome

I'm a Chartered Counselling Psychologist with many years of experience working in different settings across primary and secondary care NHS services, as well as the private and charity sector. In my most recent positions I was working as a Highly Specialist Counselling Psychologist in an NHS community mental health team and as an Associate Psychologist in a private psychology clinic in West London.

I believe that some of our operating in everyday life becomes so automatic with time, that we become unaware of parts of ourselves and things we do or feel that are impacting us in unhelpful ways. Therapy can be a space where we stop, think and check in with ourselves. Some people come to therapy after struggling with an issue for a long time, others come after a recent event brought about a significant change in their lives. I think that becoming aware of these blind spots, that we all have, can help us navigate our lives more actively. In turn, becoming more active means experiencing our lives more fully and positioning ourselves in a way that puts in motion the changes we want to bring about.

Areas of specialty

I have particular experience in working with people who struggle with

  • feeling depressed or anxious
  • relationship problems, relationship loss, family issues and loneliness
  • traumatic experiences and post-traumatic stress
  • physical health issues
  • stress, burn-out, work-related issues and career direction
  • creativity and creative processes.

I also work with couples, helping them to understand more about

  • what may contribute to their dynamic and difficulties
  • ways in which unconscious processes shape their relationship
  • communication and ways in which this may be improved.

Importantly, you don't have to know what exactly is wrong to go to therapy. Sometimes the issue is that we are not quite sure what is going on. We may feel stuck, hopeless or unsure and therapy can be a tool to shed some light.

I tend to work in an open-ended time frame. This allows scope to explore the things that emerge along the way. I do also work in a time-limited way depending on the problem, this would be more focussed and oriented towards a particular issue.

I welcome clients from all walks of life, no matter their ethnicity, culture, sexuality, gender or disability.

Training, qualifications & experience

In my doctoral training, I trained in person-centred, psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioural therapy. I believe in the usefulness of different types of therapy and particularly the importance of the therapeutic relationship in therapeutic work. I integrate ideas from different modalities, whilst fundamentally practicing from a relational psychodynamic standpoint. This approach highlights the importance of our early relationships and the unconscious in our way of operating in our everyday lives. The significance of the therapeutic relationship emphasises the importance of finding the right therapist with whom you can form a therapeutic relationship.

I have experience across a wide range of difficulties, including depression, anxiety, relationship problems, a wide range of different traumatic experiences including abuse and domestic violence, stress, burn-out and also offer sessions focussing on career direction. I also have experience of working with those affected directly or indirectly by physical health issues. I have a particular interest in physical health and how psychological processes are intertwined with our physical body. I am also very interested in creative processes and particularly music and writing and offer sessions supporting this particular process.

HCPC
Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.

They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.

Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I have a particular interest in physical health, physical health issues and the interaction between physical and psychological processes.

I am also particularly interested in working with creative people and processes, particularly writing and music along with other forms of artistic creation. In my doctoral research, I explored musicians' experiences of listening to music and analysed these based on what they can teach therapists about listening. I was able to learn more about not only listening but also creative processes and how these emerge. If you would like to know more or are interested in working with me to think more about a creative block or explore your creative process, please contact me to discuss further.
