About me

Hello and thankyou for taking the time to consider me as someone you may like to work with. I appreciate that in looking for a counsellor you have already taken the first important step towards finding a way forward that fits better with how you would like to feel and how you might like to experience life. That first step is often the hardest and takes the most courage.

As a fully qualified counsellor I work face to face with adults in Inverness and Strathspey as well as online.

I  work using a person-centred approach, offering a safe and confidential space in which to explore whatever is on your mind or how you are experiencing life. I will listen without judgment - you are the expert in your life and you know what feels difficult or painful. I will work with you to untangle what feels complicated and explore what is causing discomfort. I believe each of us has an innate sense of direction of growth towards our own 'best version' of ourselves and in our sessions I will work to offer you the conditions in which you might best identify this way forward for yourself.

It often happens in counselling that feelings and awareness that have lain beneath the surface will emerge and this can sometimes feel challenging and uncomfortable. This is symptomatic of growth and may be the first steps towards the change you hope to see. It can sometimes feel unsettling to see things in a different light and to realise that long-held assumptions perhaps no longer hold true, however the safety of the counselling relationship will ensure that whatever comes up for you is sensitively received and is offered adequate space so that you don't feel overwhelmed or alone with these thoughts and feelings.

Our time together is for you - it is your safe, confidential space to explore what matters to you, what it is that you're experiencing and what's on your mind.

Experience

As a counsellor based in GP practices in the Highlands, I have worked with adults of all ages, each of whom has brought their own unique lived experience, thoughts and feelings to our sessions. Issues can include a range of life challenges from depression and anxiety to bereavement, separation, issues at work, chronic illness, suicidal thoughts and low self-esteem, as well as historic issues that continue to impact, such as childhood abuse, fertility challenges and trauma. Those who I work with come from every and any walk of life, represent every adult age group and maybe neurotypical or neurodiverse, from any faith or none. My experience and passion is working with people, whatever their challenges in life, in a way that harnesses their own innate ability to move forward.

I currently work in an NHS setting in Highland and continue to see clients privately in my own practice.

I am a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and work in line with their Ethical Framework.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

This list is not definitive and is only a snapshot of what might be explored in the counselling room. People come to counselling who are experiencing a wide range of challenges in life and this list only touches on some of them. For many people, they come simply because they feel 'stuck' in life or 'down' and can't quite put a finger on why. Some are not sure why they feel the need to come and that in itself is a good starting point. The things that need our attention have a habit of finding their way to the surface.

Wheelchair user access
Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.

Both premises in Inverness and Strathspey are wheelchair user friendly.
