About me

It's difficult choosing a therapist - I know, I've done it! I can tell you how I work and explain my counselling modality etc but you'll probably just look at my profile picture and wonder what I'm like.

So, briefly - if you decide you like the look of me - I work in a person-centred way which means that our relationship is central to our work together. I aim to establish trust from the very first session with you, so you come to experience your sessions with me as space where you can truly be yourself and say anything you want to say, the good, the bad and the ugly.

I'm not going to judge you. I'm going to listen - really listen. Talking about the things that hurt us now, or have hurt us in the past, with someone who is trying to put themselves in our shoes so they can understand what these things felt like is a profound experience - an experience that can lead to better understanding of ourselves and others. That's what I'm offering you.

Please take that first step and get in touch, either by email or telephone.

Training, qualifications & experience

I qualified in person-centred and psychodynamic counselling at the University of Edinburgh in 2013. I've been in practice since I joined Cruse Bereavement Care Scotland on a trainee placement in 2010. I gained a certificate in supervision skills from the Northern Guild in 2017.  I've worked in private practice since 2013, as well as with Cruse and PF Counselling in Edinburgh. I'm also a COSCA-accredited trainer and a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority, qualifications gained during my years working for the University of Aberdeen (2016 onwards) as a counselling tutor (person-centred master's programme).

Before retraining as a therapist, I worked as a journalist for 30 years and gained a BSc Hons in Psychology with the Open University.

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

COSCA
College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists (COSCA)

COSCA is the professional body for counselling and psychotherapy in Scotland, and seeks to advance all forms of counselling and psychotherapy and the use of counselling skills by promoting best practice and through the delivery of a range of sustainable services. COSCA Counsellor Accreditation is a pathway to entry onto the UKRC.

It is a requirement of all individual and organisational members of COSCA to abide by its Statement of Ethics and Code of Practice and be accountable to the Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
