About me

My name is Desmond Channer and I am a fully qualified Counsellor. I am a Registrant Member of British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy [RMBACP].

I am able to offer focused, short-term counselling as well as in-depth, long-term therapy at comfortable consulting rooms in Woodford (North East London) as well as at my home either in a virtual capacity or in person.

Sometimes life is complicated and currently we are living in uncertain times with difficult issues to contend with. You may find that there is little space to decompress or take stock of the changing world around you.  Our sense of belonging and our place within the groups we cohabit can become confused and difficult to maintain. Distractions arising from work and social pressures, negative news narratives, digital media, and in particular social media, fragment our attention and focus from what is important in life and can intensify anxiety and feelings that overwhelm.

Counselling can help you to reflect on and re-examine what is important in your life and where you may have got stuck in habits that no longer work for you. A listening space is an increasingly rare opportunity for self-reflection in a hectic world.

Mindful of boundaries, I offer a safe, confidential and reliable space where individuals can talk openly about themselves to help them understand what might have contributed to their problems.

My demeanour is warm, empathic and supportive and for some, I simply provide a much-needed opportunity to be received and understood and I am of the firm belief that if I can accommodate you with an empathetic, non-judgemental approach, you will experience our therapeutic relationship in a way that will support you and your concerns.

My approach is based on the understanding that difficult experiences can affect the way we think, feel and behave. I have studied humanistic, psychodynamic, attachment, and cognitive concepts and methods of treatment, which allows me to understand my clients from a variety of perspectives.

I have worked extensively with students in the 16-20 cohort over the last 5 years as well as a bereavement counsellor for Barts NHS trust for 4.5 years. I have also run my own private practice for the last 4 years

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
