About me

Do you feel like you’re constantly having to adapt to please others, or working hard just to feel ‘good enough’, valued or accepted? Maybe you feel that if you were to show your honest and real self, you won’t be liked or loved.

This is a lonely place to be, that will leave you feeling empty, insignificant and exhausted all at once (I knew this place all too well).

However, growth and transformation is more than possible. As I will encourage and support you in exploring many aspects of both you and your life so far, this includes your experiences, your family of origin, understanding your personality type, your desires, your expectations, your passions and your deepest fears. These are all extremely important to consider and find out within our sessions.

Who am I?

I’m David, If someone were to have asked me years ago 'you're going to be a counsellor when you're older' I would have frowned and shook my head “no way”. However, all sorts of things happen to us in our lives (including my own). As going through my own trauma and challenges and seeking help made me see the value of counselling. People can say and do 'things' to us that are out of our control, but sadly these will impact us more than we realise. Because these 'things' can end marriages, make abusive partners, become an emotionally closed or violent parent, create people pleasers and keep you small and insignificant.

So now here I am as a male counsellor who is also a son, brother, husband, dad, divorcee, leader of a mens group and friend. Who wants to offer my support in helping you to understand and process what you are experiencing, allowing your thoughts and feelings to be heard and validated without judgement or shame.

Finding the right support in counselling can feel scary. However, when you find a counsellor who 'sees' you, it gives you a unique space to pause and reflect. I place a high value on developing trust and honesty. Counselling is a process and it has to be done at your pace. So I will support you on your own journey of understanding and how you relate to the world.

Some of my specialities include:

  • What is it to be Masculine or Feminine? which one do you relate to or recognise more in yourself? What is your a man but have feminine traits? What if you're a woman and have masculine traits? does that make a difference to you?
  • Working with anxiety, when it developed, how is it impacting you, and how to work with it.
  • Finding your purpose, passions and desires. Unlocking your potential and creating a meaningful life.
  • Allowing men to explore who they really are, as well as the expectations of what a man is supposed to be. This is so important for men to understand.
  • Supporting neurodivergent clients, helping to proudly welcome all that you are, as well as exploring the challenges you face.
  • Supporting clients through relationship breakdown/separation/divorce. Helping to re-build self-worth, gain understanding and build self-esteem.

Sometimes we find ourselves facing issues that are simply too overwhelming to face or too difficult to tell the people around us. Which can often lead to dark thoughts, loneliness or debilitating low self-worth. I have experienced some of the above issues throughout my life, so can identify with many client's feelings when they are facing their own dark times.  A sad statement that I often hear from clients is "I will always feel like this", or "this is just how I am". These statements are not only false but they limit who we could be and keep us feeling insignificant.

As a qualified integrative counsellor with many years experience in working in mental health sector, supporting clients who have faced some deeply emotional situations. The approaches I use are Cognitive behavioural therapy, Person-centred therapy, Solution focused therapy, Psychodynamic therapy and mindfulness. I also use metaphors of movement, bringing images and metaphors to evoke different thinking. I am creative person and I often use cards, objects, words or drawings to help connect to feelings and thoughts that may be difficult to say verbally.

I am a fully insured practitioner and an MBACP registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, as well as an accredited member of the NCPS (National Counselling Society).

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a number of years experience in my established private practice working with clients who are experiencing anxiety, depression, low self worth, gender identity, trauma (sexual, physical and mental), shame and grief, abuse and relationship/family issues.

previously I worked as a counsellor at the Delamere centre at Halton hospital for 2 years as well as Night stop community services in widnes for 12 months. Prior to that I spent 3 years at samaritans as a listening volunteer.

Being real and authentic with another person can be extremely scary. However, gradually sharing your true feelings with a trusted person can be the beginnings of finding out who you truly are. This can be a difficult journey of self discovery but one of most valuable and beautiful things you will ever do for yourself.
