About me

Online Counselling

Hi, my name is Colin McMorran and I'm a BACP Registered Therapeutic Counsellor practicing exclusively online. Through Personal Transformation Therapy my clients are changing their lives. My clients are finding online therapy is effective and convenient. I also work as a Specialist Mental Health Student Mentor and am an ACAS Certified Internal Workplace Mediator (CIWM, OCR Accrediting body).

Platforms

WhatsApp Video, iPhone FaceTime, Skype, Zoom (I ask the client to host Zoom sessions), Telephone.

What I offer

I offer an online space in which issues that can be difficult to discuss can be explored in a confidential and non-judgemental way. This takes the form of talking therapy / personal mentoring.

These issues can include anxiety, depression, lack of confidence, relationship issues, financial worries, grief following loss of a loved one and fear of death. You may be suffering from low mood/depression, low self-esteem or intimacy issues. You may be struggling to find meaning in your life or have a crisis of faith. Perhaps you find yourself repeating negative behaviour patterns but don't understand why and therefore find it difficult to make positive changes. You may have experienced a traumatic childhood event or perhaps you were at the mercy of poor parenting, either through ignorance and neglect or wilful abuse.

How we will work together

The therapeutic process will go at your pace for as long as you need, tackling difficult subjects when you feel you’re ready. We will be looking below the surface to understand the roots of the problem as well as developing strategies to help you to cope better and interrupt patterns of unhelpful behaviour and ways of thinking. When it feels right we will drop deeper into your psyche and explore your inner world and connect with the core of your being.

By exploring your own life and how your past experiences have shaped the person you’ve become, you can begin a process of self-realisation and over time self-acceptance. As Carl Rogers said, ‘The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change’. Once we can truly see ourselves we are better able to see others and this can bring about positive change, leading to deeper relationships and a life of meaning and purpose.

Training, qualifications & experience

Formal qualifications

Level 4 Diploma in the Theory & Practice of Counselling.

Registered member of the British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists (MBACP).

  • Prerequisite: Level 3 Diploma (1 year) - Level 2 Diploma (8 months).
  • Level 4 Diploma (2 years); seven units each covering theory, professional development and skills practice or peer supervision and personal development. Compulsory requirements: A minimum of 150 hours placement hours (100 hours counselling and 50 hours of workplace activity), One hour supervision for every eight hours of client work, 10 hours personal counselling and Two residential weekends.

Personal and professional development

I've had the opportunity to further my knowledge and experience by completing training courses and research (on-going) in such areas as: bereavement/grief, mindfulness, personality and its transformations, positive affirmations, limbic system/emotions, subconscious process, the inner child, cognitive processes and emotive triggers.

My passion for mental health, psychology, psychotherapy and philosophy drives me to investigate the latest developments in areas concerned with the psyche; how it forms into our personalities and affects our behaviours. I'm fascinated by the transformative power of becoming more self-aware, something I have first-hand experience of.

Mental Health Student Mentor. Working with University students who have been assessed as needing mental health support. I provide that support throughout their course of study, along with coaching and guidance.

ACAS Certified Internal Workplace Mediator. ACAS certified training course, verified by the OCR accrediting body. The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service is a Crown non-departmental public body of the Government of the United Kingdom. I act as a mediator between aggrieved parties to facilitate a resolution that both parties can agreed to, this is a service that hopes to avoid more formal processes.

Hospice work. During my 2 years volunteering at a local hospice I was privileged to work with clients of all ages and backgrounds facing the harshest life situations. I found it rewarding and humbling to be allowed into the private worlds of my clients; each has a unique story and each in their own way has shown how the human spirit has the potential to triumph over adversity. This work gave me invaluable therapeutic experience in grief and loss.

Personal experience

Aside from formal qualification, I draw upon decades of life experience involving the usual twists and turns and highs and lows. In the past, just like everyone else, I’ve been no stranger to regretting decisions and carrying that burden with the associated feelings of guilt, I also remember all too clearly the stomach churning dread and anxiety that comes with the fear of what tomorrow may bring.

I've lost of a loved one, experienced a relationship breakdown, had a forced change of career and suffered financial difficulties, however, throughout those life lessons the constants were a passion for philosophy and psychology and a fascination with the human psyche.

I'm passionate about psychology and philosophy and find these subjects combined with my formal counselling qualifications and personal experience allow me to work with clients in a dynamic and fluid way. My practice is grounded in Person Centred Counselling and expands into Personal Mentoring and Personal Guidance where appropriate.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Counsultation

I offer a free 20 minute online/telephone consultation where we can discuss the reasons you have come to therapy. I will tell you about myself and my approach to counselling and a little about the therapeutic process. I will discuss the counselling contract and confidentiality. However, more importantly, we will see if there's a connection between us that feels right for beginning our therapeutic journey together.

I've found in my experience that you will instinctively know when you've found the right therapist. If it feels right and you would like to work with me then we can discuss practicalities such as when to start and agreeing upon a regular time to meet.
