About me

Hi there, I'm Wendy.

I am a fully qualified and BACP Registered Humanistic Integrative Counsellor and Therapist.

As a therapist, I am interested in building a connection with you first and foremost, with trust and honesty, based on kindness and warmth. It is important for you to feel safe to come to me for support and to know you will be accepted and understood without judgment or prejudice.

You might be feeling stuck or hopeless, in limbo, wanting to make a change and to feel differently about yourself but unsure of where to start. Whatever the dilemma, conflict, or difficulty you are facing, I am here to listen to all parts of you, offer insight and support you to find a way through, at a pace that is personal to you.

How will sessions work:
Sessions will be unique to us and the relationship we build together. Whether you are new to counselling or not, the sessions may feel challenging at times, there will be moments of discomfort but there will also be moments of surprise and relief, possibly joy, as you understand and discover more about yourself.

Through gentle questioning and offering my own reflections during our conversations we will work together to help you gain a new understanding. I will bring my curiosity and patience in helping you to make sense of and connect with yourself and with the world around you.

My background:

I have over 25 years’ experience of supporting individuals and families in a variety of settings, including Great Ormond Street Hospital, Camden Youth Offending Service and a leading visible difference & disfigurement charity Changing Faces. I have worked with children, young people, adults and their families at all stages of development and life transitions, supporting them to understand, address and move on from their psychological distress and personal difficulties.

Through working with individuals from many different backgrounds, cultural and religious beliefs I see it as important to work with a person’s social and cultural context, and how different parts of a person’s identity come together.

I am experienced in working with a wide range of issues, however, my specialistic areas of interest are Identity, Body Image, Loss/Bereavement, Relationships/Dating, Anxiety, Depression, Obsessional Thinking/Behaviour, Confidence and Parenting Issues.

Taking the next step:
To set up an initial appointment, send me a message sharing a little bit about your situation, your availability, and any questions you might have. There is no obligation to commit after this initial session.

If you are unsure about counselling, or if we can work together, I am happy to offer a short (10-15 minutes) telephone or online consultation free of charge so I can help you answer any questions you might have.

My standard fee for a 50 mins session is £70. I offer online (Zoom), phone and face-to-face sessions in Hackney (some day time zoom and phone sessions available at £60). I am happy to consider reduced-rate options for people on lower incomes, however spaces for this may be limited. Please do get in touch with me to discuss pricing.

Initial consultation slots available week of 29th April:

Mon 29th April - 2pm, Wed 1st May - 5 & 7pm, Thurs 2nd May - 3, 4, & 5pm

Training, qualifications & experience

Training/Qualifications:

  • Level 5 Advanced Diploma in Humanistic Integrative Counselling (BACP accredited course)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Systemic Theory
  • NVQ Level 3 Training for Work with Parents
  • BSc. (Hons) Psychology

My work is fully insured and professionally supervised, in accordance with BACP guidelines and I adhere to the BACP Codes of Ethics in my practice.

Experience:
My practice offers support for a wide range of difficulties (listed below) as well as a particular interest and experience in working with individuals living with a visible difference to the face or body. This includes conditions from birth, acquired at some other stage in life or altered through illness, surgery or treatment.

As a Wellbeing Practitioner and Counsellor for 11 years at the charity Changing Faces, I supported clients to explore a range of issues in conjunction with how their condition/visible difference impacted their day-to-day life/work, relationships, and sense of self/identity. This has given me specialist knowledge and understanding in the following areas: avoidance, social anxiety, social interactions, staring, concealment, intimacy, shame, fear of rejection, self-criticism, uncertainty, loss, identity and belonging issues and feelings of ‘not good enough’.

Prior to Changing Faces, I worked in statutory, social care and mental health settings with children and families, including an adolescent inpatient unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital and as a Parenting Worker for 6 years at Camden Youth Offending Service.

In recent years I have gained experience as a Bereavement Counsellor at Camden City Islington & Westminster Bereavement Service.

My approach:
My therapeutic approach is humanistic and integrative. I use psychodynamic theory to conceptualise clients’ needs. This is while drawing upon Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Systemic Therapy, Narrative and Solution Focused Therapy techniques to help clients make sense of their inner world and make use of it in the external world.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
