About me

Experience is not what happens to you, it’s what you do with what happens to you. (Aldous Huxley)

Betty Ko BSc (Hons), Dip Counselling, BACP member

People seek counselling for different reasons: some clients seek counselling to help with depression, anxiety, panic attack, feeling sad, phobia, addiction or other issues. Others might see a counsellor to help them cope with stressful life situations, challenges, isolation, emotional traumas, bereavement or identity issues. Some clients might use counselling as a mean to improve their emotional well-being and stability in life. People who seek counselling come from all walks of life and from different social and ethnic backgrounds.

About the therapist:

I am a BPS member with experience working with individuals and young people for brief or long-term therapy. My approach is mainly psychodynamic which means during the counselling process, the client and I will look at how past experiences influence their current feelings and behaviour. We will also explore repetition behaviours and the way to change them. I might employ creative techniques such as shell work, drawings and clay to access unconscious and enhance self-awareness. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) skills might also apply to facilitate the work if appropriate.

I have worked in a Chinese community for 6 years, I see clients who speak Cantonese, Mandarin or English. Being a Chinese counsellor, I understand the importance of cultural background and norms. I can also work with immigrants from different cultures who may be challenged by exclusion, regarding identity and adaptation issues.

I have worked in Cambridge Cogwheel Trust as a volunteer counsellor for 14 months. Currently I am seeing students in different Colleges as school counsellor.

How I work

Confidential one to one counselling is offered to adults on short or long-termed basis in a safe, comfortable and non-judgmental environment in central Cambridge. Appointments are available during weekdays and some evenings. Sessions are tailored towards specific needs, depending on whether you seek counselling to resolve a crisis, change your current stressful life situations or deal with ongoing underlying issues. The length of therapy depends entirely up to you, some people might see a therapist for 6 to 12 sessions, others might see a counsellor for a longer term.

我的手提電話號碼  07980 976723 電郵:betty.kocounselling@gmail.com

Member organisations

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
