About me
I have been passionate about healing trauma and mental health issues for nearly 30 years. The path that led me to counselling started with being a nurse in 1996 to progressing to nurse specialist 2005 (health visitor). From 2013 I was a foster carer for a year until I welcomed two young children to be a permanent part of my family. This is when I was inspired to become a counsellor and use my ‘lived’ & working experience to help others with their trauma and mental health problems.
I am still as curious about the world as I was as a child. I am neurodivergent (ADHD, Dyslexia & Irlen syndrome) and I identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community (pansexual). I have experienced trauma at different times in my life. I am fascinated with the diversity and uniqueness of other people. I love to spend time working with clients uniqueness to discover who the real person is without masking & feeling like they need to ‘fit in’ to social norms. I will meet you without judgement & offer you a safe environment so that I can experience the world through your eyes.
My main passion is working with trauma/ptsd. Many people have experienced trauma and it can present at different times in your life in many different ways.
The foundation of my approach is person centred talk therapy. I work with my clients holistically and if a client chooses we can work with other therapies to help to heal their trauma and anxiety or to help with issues with ADHD and autism.
Other approaches I use at present are
Trauma massage: for Domestic Abuse, PTSD & Sexual Abuse
Yoga for trauma recovery: Somatic, polyvagal system approach.
Indian head massage (traditional)
Indian head massage for additional needs: ADHD, autism & mental health
Thai foot massage: Traditional
Special Yoga "Special Yoga: Supporting Children with Special and Additional Needs to Achieve their True Potential and Purpose"
Breath work: pranayama, polyvagal theory approach.
Relaxation therapy: mindfulness, guided visualisation, progressive muscle relaxation, bio feedback
Creative art therapy/Expressive art therapy. For processing trauma/anxiety/depression. Emotional regulation, coping skills. Can be used as a way to make therapy easier to access eg; clients that find eye contact uncomfortable, clients that feel that they need to be ‘doing’ to concentrate and focus (stimming, fidgeting).
EMDR: bilateral stimulation processing for trauma, phobias, pain, anxiety.
To be able to process trauma you need to be in a safe space. Whatever it is you need to feel safe I will strive to accommodate. If you need to bring items to the session to help you, such as fidget items, chewing gum, drawing items, sensory items etc, you are more than welcome. I do provide art and sensory items also that you can explore and use.

Experience
I have professional experience working with people across the lifespan. I have worked with pre school children and their families supporting and educating on physical, social and emotional development. This would include behaviour management, healthy eating, safety, bonding and attachment and parental mental health. This also included having a good working knowledge of safeguarding.
I have professional and personal experience of working with children that have been removed from their birth families. Some are short term and return to their families. These children need to be made to feel safe and maintain their connections with family. Some children are long term or permanent care.
I have had experience with children that have experienced severe abuse and neglect. They have had many complex behaviours such as hypervigilance, stealing, destruction, self harm, lying, manipulation, lack of boundaries, wetting, soiling and many other behaviours. These behaviours often stem from fear. They have had so many adverse childhood experiences that they experience toxic stress. They are in a constant state of fight or flight mode and they are unable to regulate their own emotions.
I have worked with adults in many different capacities. I have worked with domestic violence, domestic abuse, emotional abuse, sexual trauma, bereavement and loss, relationships, anxiety, social anxiety, low self esteem, childhood trauma,
I have also worked professionally with older adults as a public health nurse where I tailored my assessments and support around emotional and mental health as well as physical. I found that there was a big need for older adults to access support for their emotional health. I found it an honour to listen to the stories and the challenges that they had overcome in their lives. This sometimes allowed them to talk about their emotional and mental health needs.
