About me

I am a professionally qualified, fully accredited, and very experienced psychotherapist and counsellor. I offer both short and longer-term therapy and I tailor my way of working so as to address your particular personality and specific needs.

At times, life can feel like a struggle. However, with appropriate help things are so much easier. I combine my wealth of experience and knowledge with the extensive range of skills and techniques that I possess, to provide you with the help that you need; to assist you in finding your way, achieving your potential, or overcoming obstacles that you are confronting.

My approach

Having successfully worked with hundreds of clients, I have come to firmly believe that there is no ‘one size fits all’ therapeutic approach or one ‘right’ way of practising therapy. We all need different things at different points in our lives; people evolve and individuals’ requirements change over time.

Consequently, in my work as a psychotherapist and counsellor I integrate psychodynamic and CBT approaches, and draw on tools, techniques, and strategies gained through other training and many years of experience.

Through doing so, I can adapt my way of working to your particular requirements as you evolve and change during the course of our work together. This will ensure that you continue to progress and bring about whatever changes you desire, to enable you to live with a greater sense of freedom and fulfilment.

How you will benefit

You will gain self-awareness and enhance your understanding about yourself, your relationships, emotional responses, thought patterns and ways of behaving, thereby increasing your ability to reflect on your circumstances and responses. This will lead to a greater sense of control in your life, helping you to make more conscious choices: rather than falling into the automatic habit of responding in a particular way, you will be able to make more considered, deliberate decisions about how you wish to act.

Our meetings

Ordinarily, we would meet once or twice weekly at a pre-agreed established time. The content of our discussion is strictly confidential and nothing whatsoever is off limits; you will find that I am entirely non-judgmental and respectful about whatever you disclose to me.

Duration of therapy

The duration of therapy depends on your individual circumstances. If you want to address a specific issue, we can work in a focused way towards a resolution, which may take just a few weeks or months. However, if your problems are more deep seated and have lasted a long time, it may take longer to resolve them and so an open-ended approach is preferable. In either case, we work towards a mutually agreed ending.

Training, qualifications & experience

Experience

I have over 20 years of working within the field of mental health and wellbeing in numerous settings. These include 7 years in a primary care setting (NHS), 13 years in university settings (Reading University and Oxford University), and many years privately, both face to face in person, and remotely (online video or audio, text based, and telephone).

Currently, in addition to my private practice, I am employed by Oxford University and work with postgraduate students, academics, and staff members of the university. I also work frequently with undergraduate students, and privately with adults and young people (17+).

Training and qualifications

After graduating from the University of Cambridge with a BA (Hons) in French and Spanish Literature, I went on to gain a distinction at Reading University for a MA in ‘The Body & Representation’.

In my MA I focused on psychoanalytical theories and practices in relation to issues of identity (including sexual/gendered identity), and to body modification – specifically eating disorders, and addiction-driven or compulsive behaviours such as tattooing or body building.

Shortly afterwards I gained a certificate in Personal Performance and Life Coaching and commenced my MA/PG Dip in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy, for which I again gained a distinction.

I then opted to train as a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist, gaining a Merit in a PG Dip in CBT and other Evidenced based Psychological Therapies.

Since my foundational therapeutic trainings I have completed numerous shorter professional development courses, such as an intensive course in ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), mindfulness training, and various disorder specific and generic trainings.

Please feel free to ask for any details.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
