About me

I only work 1-1 with addictions to Alcohol, Drugs, and Gambling. My approach, the 4Ts (Triage, Therapy, Transformation, Tracking) combines – an assessment, therapy and managed change, tracked over time. There are more resources at Simon Burgess “The UK’s leading addiction therapist”, where I’ve written over 30 articles covering many aspects of addiction and recovery.

Every addiction has a cause or a clear barrier to recovery. It’s not an incurable disease. Rehab, residential and 12-step programmes fail 85% of people suffering from addiction in the first year. My approach is tracking at over 90% effective (90% of my client base still clear of addiction at the 1 year mark)

My addiction checklist looks like this...

i) A behaviour that seriously harms your well-being (and you know it)
ii) Where the “high” has diminished significantly (or gone entirely)
iii) A behaviour you lack control over (and cannot stop permanently)

The extent of the Harm, the lack of the High and the degree of your Control determine the severity of the addiction. If you tick these boxes I can help you.

I am a qualified counsellor/therapist to the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) standards and a BACP member and have created my own, very effective framework, for treating addiction. In years to come you will reflect a lot on the moment for reached out for help. Is this it?

Call, email, or text me and make 2024 the year you ditched your addiction to alcohol, drugs or gambling. I’ll respond within hours of your enquiry.

Training, qualifications & experience

After 25 years in business and management, I qualified as a therapist. I have only ever worked with addiction, from my placement training onwards. I created my, highly effective, 4Ts approach, drawing on all the best practices I have been exposed to, in what is a poorly served, mental health area.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Further information

Every addiction I have come across has a cause or causes or a barrier or barriers to recovery. These causes or barriers fall into 4 categories.

Trauma: What happened to me?

Self-image: Who am I?

Behavioural: How do I change ingrained behaviours?

Existential: What is my purpose?

We will work together to identify the combination of causes of your addiction, or barriers to your recovery and make a series of life changes that, in aggregate, will help make your recovery effective, and final.

This combination of therapy and change, starting with an assessment, and tracked over time, is very powerful and is not available anywhere else.

Including, how families and friends can help, what addiction actually is, where support groups can go wrong, the financial upside of ditching an addiction, and why my approach is so much more successful than the established routes of groups and rehab.
