About me

Hi, I am Richard and I wanted to share with you a little of what I might be able to offer in terms of support, if you are currently finding life’s challenges hard to navigate alone.

I can’t promise to have any easy answers, but I am confident that together we can bring about positive and meaningful changes to your life. I will use my extensive experience of supporting people (both adults and children for over 15 years in the statutory sector) to carefully work alongside you to arrive at solutions that are best for you.

In our work together we would be looking at internal problems, as therapy assumes that what goes on within us - so how we think and feel about ourselves - affects our behaviour and relationship with others. Paying careful attention to this allows for growth in understanding ourselves, which can then be used to bring about significant life improvements.

My training is as an Integrative therapist, which is another way of saying I’m qualified to practice a range of therapeutic approaches (such as Person-centred, Psychodynamic & CBT). I offer both short-term counselling and longer-term exploratory therapy.

My approach has a significant focus on attachment orientated psychotherapy. This means that we would work together on building a trusting, supportive therapeutic relationship, offering you a safe space to focus on expressing your emotions in healthier, more useful ways. We would remain curious about your past and what emotional strategies you learnt from your caregivers (often our parents) and how you adapted to your environment to become the person that you are today.  These important experiences can assist us in our understanding around your ability to form healthy emotional and physical relationships as an adult.

Although my practice offers support for a wide range of difficulties, I have a great deal of experience in working with individuals (often adults who were adopted or young people who’ve been in foster care) that have been struggling with low self-esteem, anxiety and depression that relates to identity issues or lacking a sense of belonging. Alongside my private practice I run a service for young adults (18 yrs to 26yrs) that is free to access. Referrals can be made by applying via the Drive Forward Foundation (a charity that supports Care experienced young people).

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
