About me

My name is Paula and I am a fully qualified integrative Counsellor . This means I have several different theories that I refer to when helping you to overcome any difficulties you may be having. I am a  registered member of the BACP (British association  for counselling and psychotherapy).

Do you find yourself awake at night with a head full of worries? and no matter how hard you try you can’t make them disappear! Are your negative thoughts ruling you and ruining your life? You may be having relationship problems, have a constant feeling of anxiety, worry or dread.

Are you struggling with some form of anxiety, maybe even having panic attacks? When we feel anxious, its usually because we are uncertain of the outcome of a particular situation. This feeling is a normal part of our growth and is just part of being alive. However, it becomes a problem when the anxiety provoking event becomes too much due to our thoughts around the event. These ongoing negative thought patterns become unmanageable and can easily build up and escalate very quickly into panic attacks. I can help you form new ways of thinking which will initially help you manage the panic attacks, and in the long term, stop them from occurring.

You may have suffered from a bereavement and are struggling to come to terms with your grief. Do you suffer with constant low mood, even depression? Do you have a low sense of self worth? Do you lack a sense of purpose in life or maybe you have lost your identity? Until you get to the root of your negative thoughts, these difficulties will not go away and your self defeating cycle will continue.

I believe that the way we function in the world, stems from our experiences. Before I qualified as a Counsellor, I taught Psychology for twelve years. I have an excellent understanding and knowledge of human behaviour and what makes us who we are. I believe, that our childhood shapes us.  Theories tell us that, from a time in our life, before our earliest memories, we have unconsciously formed a way of being in the world. These patterns of relating to others and situations may be what is causing you difficulties.

I can help you find the answers!

I offer face to face therapy for individuals and couples.  I also offer walking/talking therapy in the local woods (in daylight hours).

I have worked with both adults and adolescents and have dealt with many different presenting issues.  These include, bereavement, anxiety, panic attacks, addiction, depression, low self worth and self esteem, relationship difficulties, self harm.  I received intensive bereavement training in a Hospice and accumulated many client hours in that role.

I am aware that relationship difficulties, as well as other issues, originate from our way of relating to others.  We usually unconsciously pick this up from childhood.  We then form relationships with others who bring their own patterns of relating to the relationship.  When the honeymoon period is over, our patterns of relating are often exposed and these sometimes clash, causing difficulties. Understanding each others patterns and working together to find a way forward is key to a healthy relationship.  I can provide support for couples who wish to separate, or help those who can’t decide which way to go.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

I also offer walking/talking therapy in my local woods (Hockley) daylight hours.

Some people don't feel as comfortable sitting face to face in a counselling room as they do when in the outdoors walking, shoulder to shoulder.  Others just feel happier outdoors. Not only that, walking out in the countryside is a great way to relax.  Conversation will flow easily as we walk through Hockley Woods.  You can set the pace.

Research has shown that walking boosts endorphins, which can reduce stress hormones and alleviate mild depression.  Regular exercise, through the production of feel good endorphins, can improve mood and self-esteem

Our first session will be in my therapy room.  During this session, I will collect your details and discuss if we feel we can work together.  If we are in agreement, we will arrange our next session outdoors.
