About us

Helping couples to move forward with new perspective, greater understanding and positive change.

The emotions you might be feeling right now are not uncommon. But they can be overwhelming, destructive and upsetting. Reaching out for support is a positive step towards overcoming your relationship breakdown together.

Our relationship counselling

Maybe you feel communication has broken down, or there is no trust in your relationship. Maybe you are struggling to be heard. You might be trying to make sense of a change in your family unit, depression, or a loss of sexual desire. At North East Couples Counselling, we help you develop a healthy, positive relationship by exploring and challenging your individual perspectives, as well as the destructive behavioural patterns that cause resentment and unhappiness within your relationship.

We believe in helping you identify the root cause of your difficulties and work with you, as a couple, to facilitate change - whether that means moving forward as a couple, individually or separately.

As fully trained counsellors with a combined experience of over 40 years working with couples through Relate, the NHS, the Prison Service and other agencies, we offer constructive support to any relationship – regardless of gender or sexual orientation.

Psychosexual counselling

We also offer specialist psychosexual counselling for individuals or couples experiencing problems in their sexual relations. We focus on physical, emotional and psychological issues, providing help and support with all aspects of psychosexual problems - from loss of sexual desire and erectile dysfunction to sexual offending and addictions.

Counselling for depression and anxiety

If you’re experiencing emotional or physical problems related to depression and anxiety, we are here for you. Our approach is positive and effective - we listen, we understand and we offer a way forward. We’ll help you to explore why you are experiencing these feelings and aim to give you practical tools to manage or overcome your depression or anxiety.

Many of our clients with psychosexual problems, depression and anxiety, refer themselves. However clients do sometimes come to us through Talking Therapies or other agencies. We offer help and support both individuals and couples.

What to expect

Because every couple is different, we always begin with an initial assessment. It helps us to understand your relationship dynamics and the context of the issues you’re experiencing. It’s important to remember that we are impartial. Our role is to listen and to challenge your thinking with effective theory and practical tools that enable you to release destructive, fixed perspectives and make real progress.

Couples counselling can be an emotional journey. But it’s also a positive one that can offer immense relief. You’ll gain new perspective, a greater understanding of each other and a renewed confidence in your future. It’s a constructive, safe process that helps you to make sense of the way you’re feeling and work through an action plan to embrace positive change. We believe in healthy relationships but of course there maybe occasions when the way forward is to separate. In these instances we will work with you to manage this difficult time.
