About me

Hi, my name is Mary, I am a registered BACP counsellor. I am based near Exeter. I have a background in health care and have worked as a cancer specialist nurse for 12 years supporting cancer patients and facilitating support groups.

I have experience working with families, adults, and young people. I am comfortable working with and supporting individuals experiencing a range of problems and complexities such as stress, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties/breakdown loss, bereavement, and addictions. I am familiar with issues relating to work stress and other professional challenges. I have also worked with clients that have been affected by domestic violence and sexual assault.

I am experienced working face-to-face, telephone, online, and walking therapy. This can be one-to-one couples and family therapy. I offer a friendly and down-to-earth approach in a safe confidential and non-judgemental space so to feel respected and supported so clients feel more able to overcome or adjust to life's issues. With training and experience, I use an integrative approach and work in a flexible and collaborative way tailoring therapy to suit my client's specific needs.

My approach is to explore the root causes of issues at the client's pace in the context of a supportive relationship. My goal is to offer holistic therapy, to empower my clients to gain self-confidence and better self-awareness. Therefore clients feel more able to cope and feel in better control of situations. Changing thought processes, and giving skills and tools to adapt, can bring about this change. My approach is to explore the root causes of issues at the client's pace in the context of a supportive relationship.

The decision to come for therapy and talk honestly with someone takes a lot of courage and trust . Therefore it is important to have confidence that the therapist you select has the relevant experience and is also a person you feel you can connect with so that the counselling is effective.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Testimonials

Thank you for your support it really has been life changing...

Mary makes me feel safe, she is kind and caring and made me feel I have a new confidence in life and myself...

I know they say that talking helps but it really does !...

I was concerned that my past life trauma would affect my future relationship but after spending time talking things through. I do not feel guilt and shame anymore, I am confident that my slate is clean, and I am getting married !..

I never thought I'd say this but I now like myself ! ..

Mary is the best counsellor I have experienced. In 10 years of counselling I have never seen any difference in my life. She has helped me overcome situations I didn't think I ever could. I would 100% recommend Mary to anyone who needs counselling.
