About me

I am a qualified integrative psychotherapist and counsellor offering a compassionate, relaxed and confidential space to explore current and past issues which may be impacting your life. I additionally hold a PhD in Psychology and have spent many years working across the NHS and private mental health services, as well as charitable organisations, bereavement services and the education sector. This broad range of experience has allowed me to support people through a wide spectrum of emotional difficulties, including complex trauma, anxiety, depression, stress, relationship difficulties, self-esteem issues, cancer and chronic illness, bereavement, youth and adolescent development, and eating disorders.

Finding the right therapist can feel like an overwhelming process and I appreciate that each person will be looking for different things from therapy. Whether you have a specific issue you would like to address, or just need space to talk freely in a supportive and non-judgemental environment, I seek to meet you there with empathy, openness and understanding. As an integrative therapist I have been trained in a range of therapeutic approaches which means we can tailor our sessions to suit your needs and explore ways of moving forwards together, at a pace you feel comfortable with.

My therapeutic approach is trauma-informed and primarily guided by psychodynamic and humanistic principles. This means we may explore how past and present experiences are shaping your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, whilst being mindful of the profound impact distressing and traumatic experiences can have on both our minds and bodies. Central to my practice is belief that the therapeutic relationship – our relationship – is integral in supporting an effective and positive experience of therapy. Clients have shared that they experience me as warm, open and personable; I seek to build a strong, trusting relationship where you can feel seen and heard, and gain a deeper understanding of yourself and the challenges you may be facing.

I offer both brief counselling for shorter periods where you can gain practical tools and knowledge for particular issues, as well as longer-term psychotherapy to explore your past and current experiences in more depth. Therapy can be a powerful resource for self-awareness, personal growth and healing, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Ultimately, my goal is to support you, in a collaborative way, to create lasting and meaningful change in your life.

I work with individuals aged 16 years and over.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

If you are interested in working with me, please contact me via email (hello@lisacottertherapy.com), or by phone/text (07824466199) and I will aim to get back to you within 48-hours. We will then arrange a free, confidential 20-minute phone call to briefly discuss what brings you to therapy. I can explain more about how I work, and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. It is important to work with a therapist who feels like the right fit for you and there is no rush to decide whether you would like to book an initial session. If you do decide you would like to move forwards, we will agree on a time for an initial session at a mutually convenient time.

During the initial session you will get a sense of how we may work together. I will invite you to tell me about yourself and we can discuss your reasons for seeking therapy in more detail. We can then decide whether to go ahead with further sessions. Each therapy session is 50-minutes in length, and I typically work with clients on a weekly basis at a regular scheduled time. There is no obligation to book in for further sessions if this does not feel right for you.
