About me

Justin Stoneham – Counsellor for Men in Mid-Life

Helping men regain control, fulfillment, and connection in high-stress lives

Navigating mid-life can be overwhelming, especially for men in high-risk, high-pressure careers. The relentless demands, responsibility, and exposure to stress can take a toll on your mental health, relationships, and overall well-being.

If you’re experiencing:

Disrupted sleep patterns – struggling to fall or stay asleep
Physical ailments – stress-related tension, pain, or fatigue
Increased alcohol or substance use – using coping mechanisms that may no longer serve you
Anger and irritability – feeling on edge or reacting more than you’d like
Anxiety and high stress – feeling overwhelmed, trapped, or out of control
Relationship issues – struggling with connection, communication, or intimacy
You’re not alone.

With over 30 years as a firefighter, I understand firsthand how chronic stress, loss, health issues, and trauma can shape our lives. I’ve witnessed how these pressures can build over time, impacting confidence, relationships, and self-worth. This lived experience, combined with my training as a trauma-informed therapist, allows me to offer both practical strategies to regulate your nervous system and deeper exploratory therapy to address the root causes of your struggles.

My approach is warm, down-to-earth, and grounded in trust, integrity, and authenticity. Clients often tell me they feel safe, heard, and understood in our sessions. I work integratively, tailoring therapy to your unique needs—whether that’s immediate coping tools to reduce stress or long-term healing for lasting change.

You don’t have to navigate this alone. If you’re ready to regain control and move toward a more fulfilling life, I’m here to support you.

Training, qualifications & experience

I completed my foundational training in Person-Centred Therapy in 2020 and since then, I've expanded my expertise by earning credentials in various evidence-based interventions like Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Motivational Interviewing & Trauma Focused CBT. I'm also qualified to provide counselling services remotely, both online and over the phone. At present, I'm working towards my Diploma in Trauma Therapy, having already received my Certificate in the same field.

I've further enhanced my skills by acquiring certificates in cognitive and somatic interventions. These methods are grounded in research and have proven both helpful and effective in managing conditions like anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and PTSD.

In addition to my counselling qualifications, I'm also an ILM Certified Coach & Mentor. I utilise various techniques and strategies to help you maximise your potential and achieve your goals. Part of this process may involve creating a plan and providing innovative methods of feedback to maintain your progress. As you will see from my website, my background is strongly rooted in training and development, and I leverage this experience to benefit our work together.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
