I am BACP Accredited Counsellor and EMDR Therapist based in Old Costessey, Norwich, Norfolk, working from my home (NR8). I can also offer appointments in NR2, central Norwich.

I offer face to face, telephone and video appointments Monday to Thursday.

I can help you discover, resolve and manage aspects of your life that you find difficult or presently overwhelming. Talking in a safe therapeutic space can help you find clarity within, reaching a better understanding which is empowering; allowing you to find your true self and resources which sets you free from mental and emotional turmoil.

I have been successful in helping people overcome their difficulties since 2008. Being a counsellor is my life purpose, helping you to overcome your struggles. I have sat in the client's chair and understand what it's like undergoing counselling. How anxiety provoking and challenging it is starting counselling, but also how empowering the journey of self discovery is. That's where the name Freedom Within Counselling came from, it's how I felt overcoming my difficulties.

I work with people aged 17 plus for individual or couples counselling, dealing with various problems such as;

  • anxietyScreen%20Shot%202013-09-02%20at%2017.58.
  • relationship issues
  • depression
  • feeling sad
  • separation and divorce
  • child related issues
  • stress
  • abuse
  • low self-esteem
  • family issues
  • affairs and betrayal
  • low self-confidence
  • traumatic events
  • behavioural problems
  • lack of trust
  • bullying
  • self harm
  • suicidal thoughts
  • phobias
  • panic disorder
  • OCD
  • emotional problems
  • uncertainties of self or future

The benefits from my time in counselling are considerable. Over the course of my consultations feelings transformed and a greater sense of freedom emerged. This was reflected in an improved relationship with myself and, so I hope, with others. Graham

Counselling with Julie has allowed me to break free from the cycle of anxiety that I had been trapped in for many years. Julie is a warm and empathetic, really listening to you and responding to your needs. It was wonderful to find a counsellor who had the ability to work with different counselling techniques. MA

Counselling is a challenging but rewarding experience. I was fortunate to find Julie, an empathetic listener who knew when to challenge me in my thought process to dig deeper, reconnect with my true self and find acceptance. Sarah

Counselling Approaches:

I am Person Centred at the core of therapy, being non judgemental, accepting, providing empathy and going at your pace. This creates a therapeutic relationship which is the vehicle for change (Rogers). Integrative Counselling, or a pluristic approach means that I am trained to be able to call upon various techniques to assist you.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps identify the interconnection of our thoughts, feelings and behaviours in past or present situations. CBT helps to empower us and gain a different perspective.

Psychodynamic Therapy looks at the importance of the unconscious and how past experiences could be shaping current behaviours. Exploring childhood relationships with parents and other significant people brings in awareness of learnt behaviours and feelings. The therapist focuses on the dynamics of the client/therapist relationship where transference can take place, such as when the client projects their feelings experienced in previous significant relationships on to the therapist. Allowing the client to explore this in a safe therapeutic space can bring positive change, understanding, finding our true self and way of being.

Mindfulness Based Approaches are beneficial and empowering for some people too; it is a relaxation technique which helps to centre ourselves, and be more grounded in our body, letting go of any thoughts. Just noticing what maybe present, accepting of how things are moment by moment. Mindfulness allows one to become more fully functioning in our awareness and daily lives.

EMDR Therapy - Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing. EMDR therapy is effective for trauma, anxiety, phobias also disturbing memories or life events. It process old disturbing memories and events that are stored in the brain which can get triggered over and over again in the present, impacting on us emotionally, psychologically and physiologically. Old disturbing memories and life events can stop us from living the life we want. EMDR therapy sets you free emotionally and resolve old problems.

I am a accredited member of BACP following their code of ethics also I have monthly supervision as part of the requirement for safe practice.
