About me

Hello and welcome to my page. I'm Jess and I'm a BACP registered counsellor. My practice Harbour Counselling and Psychotherapy currently offers  Counselling and Drawing and Talking Therapy to adults.

How can counselling with me help?

Counselling and psychotherapy is an opportunity to untangle some of the complex feelings and life experiences that we encounter. This could be a situation that has unexpectedly arose, an ongoing difficulty, or unresolved trauma from the past influencing  you in the present. Working alongside a professional in a supportive environment can assist you to gain insights into what is happening for you. Therapy is often the first step towards understanding the root cause of distress, the function in our patterns of behaviour and the ways in which we relate to both the world and the people around us. Once we can understand why we respond the way we do, it is often easier to foster self-compassion and build effective coping mechanisms.

How I work?

Counselling is a unique experience so it's important to find the right therapist for you and your needs at this time. I respect that you are the only person who knows what it's like to be you living your life. Therefore, I work in a relational way to help you discover what you need in order to heal. Together we can gently explore the barriers that may be preventing that from happening. As your therapist I will not give advice or tell you what to do. I will listen empathetically to both your experiences and concerns. I work in collaboration with you to process your experience, help you to understand your self and build coping skills.

I am a trauma informed counsellor who trained and qualified as an integrative therapist which enables me to utilise a variety of therapeutic models to support our work together. I draw from person-centred, psychodynamic, gestalt and creative methodologies. I value each client as a an individual with unique life experiences. Therefore, the counselling I provide is set at your pace and tailored to your individual needs.

Throughout my personal experience of training I have seen the stigma associated with mental health and help seeking. While reaching out can be anxiety provoking, I believe that there should not be any shame in seeking counselling. I am passionate about destigmatising mental health conditions the impact of trauma. I have sat in both the client and therapist chair and so understand and respect the vulnerability and bravery it takes to engage in the process of counselling.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
