About me

Hello my name is Jan and welcome, I offer Psychotherapeutic counselling to young people (11+) Adults of all ages and couples.

People seek counselling for all different reasons. Maybe you're stuck, sad, overwhelmed?

Suffering from low mood, overthinking and or negative thoughts. Or you feel unheard and you simply want to scream out loud and say things you never said before, perhaps therapy can help?

I have worked with lots of different problems including anxiety, depression, trauma, abuse, grief, loss, addictions, codependency, eating disorders and shame, whatever it may be I am keen to help.

Therapy can often be about change, you have reached a point where ‘enough is enough’ and you wish to identify your choices and build personal resilience. We will work together to build a trusting therapeutic relationship in order for you to explore this.

What it might look like if we worked together.

When we first work together I will listen carefully to your story with compassion, empathy and warmth whilst offering a non judgemental approach. Often being understood perhaps for the first time can be deeply healing.

Secondly, I will listen to your thoughts/thought process. I will be listening to whether your thoughts are being unkind to you, if what they are telling you is the whole story, or if there is a negative bias which might be making things more difficult for you. Our brains are amazing at creating short cuts in our thought processes, but sometimes these short cuts don't benefit us and can lead to some cognitive distortions. I will gently challenge you so that you can gain greater awareness of your thought process and how this might be impacting on your mood and behaviours.

Thirdly, and for me, most importantly, I will hone in on your feelings. Helping you to explore them, acknowledge them, welcome them. Our feelings are our guides, our inner compass, they are too important to ignore. Sitting with strong feelings can be difficult, but so worthwhile. I can help you with this. To acknowledge your feelings and allow them to begin to flow, rather than denying or repressing them.

The rest will depend on you and your personal history. Perhaps a visualisation or some inner child work will help you? Or we might work creatively with drawing or painting, or with emotion cards/worksheets. I will offer you a non-judgemental space where you can explore and begin to understand and accept your personal history.

Counselling I offer

There are lots of different types of counselling available. I work in an integrative way, from a person-centred core approach. This means I work to create a trusting, empathic therapeutic relationship which is beneficial for my clients. I then integrate a blend of theoretical approaches, Psychodynamic, Transactional Analysis and CBT in my model, to enable me to work with a range of issues, both past and present, that might be presented. I work both long term and short term with clients. The sessions are open ended and my clients are free to end sessions with me at any point.

What to expect when you contact me;

I know it can take a lot of courage to ask for help. I will offer you an initial appointment that is convenient for you and will try my best to put you at your ease. I will meet you with understanding and warmth, without any judgement and try to help you decide on the right way forward for you.

Life can throw us some massive curve balls, life events can send us reeling, human lives rarely run smoothly all the time. You don’t have to negotiate this on your own.  Please contact me if you would like to book an initial session with me and start your therapeutic journey.

I am a registered member of the BACP (MBACP) which means I am committed to working ethically with you and put your wellbeing at the centre of our work together.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
