About me

I specialise in anxiety, panic disorder, OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), phobias and ruminations. My specialisms also includes stress management, working through ruminations that may be troubling, working with clients to reduce phobias and fears, and supporting greater self-confidence and self-esteem. I also work with trauma and identity and as a neuroscientist graduate, (through my initial degree), I incorporate the biology of the body with the therapy work that I undertake.

My work with clients who have a range of anxiety issues looks at their past experiences, practical ways of managing anxiety & stress, bodily systems involved and taking a more holistic approach in the management of anxiety with clients. Anxiety does not have to be life limiting and really does not have to manage you. You can manage it through empathy, self-care & understanding.

Over the long term, anxiety, stress, panic and ruminations can deplete bodily energy, create confusion, a sense of low self-esteem and a sense that someone ‘cannot do what others do’. At the heart of it, it is about an internalised risk assessment process that those affected by it, go through, as though their internal script is to manage external risks that in many cases, seems much larger than it actually may be.

As a qualified BACP registered therapist, and as someone who has lived with, managed and reduced the impacts of anxiety on my life for over 30 years, I understand how this condition can affect and permeate many parts of a person’s life.

If you are looking to make a change, feel more in charge, less critical and even find ways of managing your stress and anxiety, do get in touch with me.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a qualified member of the BACP  - British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

I have worked for over 25 years in communities across the United Kingdom and have a real passion for people. When we strip away the daily routines of life, it is people, their kindness, smiles and contact, that allows us to fully appreciate life. I am a firm believer in this and the connectedness & healing that we can have towards each other.

I also have brought with me into my counselling work the professional experience of having a BSc in Neuroscience, so I am able to include anatomy, physiology and pharmacology into my counselling work where appropriate. In the end, our collective mental health relies on our experiences, childhood, biology and the meanings that we place on things.

At the root of my work, combining these elements, where appropriate, allows for a richer understanding by some who work in therapy with me.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

I am a registered BACP member and realised within my decades-long work with people and communities, that anxiety and mental health conditions can seriously affect the future decisions and life outcomes of those affected.

Yet, I have also come to realise that counselling support can provide a route through which people can feel rooted, more confident and able to manage anxiety, stress, intrusive thoughts & relationships, thereby moving their lives forward.

Anxiety can be a condition that feels disabling, overwhelming and all-consuming. It has a knock on effect on self-confidence and self-esteem; but it really does not have to be this way and the body and mind can adapt over time to be able to make meaning of, and overcome feelings of anxiety so that they are manageable and even, peripheral to someone's life. I know, since I have experience of this which I outline below.

I therefore have lived experience of managing long-term anxiety in my life and I have sought pathways that have worked for me, in managing anxiety. One of those pathways was dedicated and committed work in therapy, in understanding the root causes of my anxiety, how it manifested itself in my life, my thoughts and ultimately in my actions. This process of understanding opened up a way in managing & viewing the anxiety, and ultimately in significantly reducing its impact on my life.

Key details

Wheelchair user access
Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.

If face to face counselling is required, I ensure that venues are wheelchair accessible.
