About me

Hi, I am Dawn and welcome to New Dawn Counselling. I wish to thank you for visiting my profile and for taking that first step in exploring support for you. You may feel apprehensive about talking with someone you are not familiar with, that’s normal. I can give you the space and freedom to share your thoughts and feelings with someone who has no pre-conceived ideas about you. If you feel a little stuck or something in your life is preventing you from reaching your full potential or you have any issues or concerns you want to talk through, I can help.

Do you pretend to function well on the outside but feel down, unmotivated and lack confidence on the inside? Are you no longer enjoying the things you once did, not quite sure what is going on for you but know something does not feel right? Feeling anxious, experiencing difficulties with relationships or finding it hard to deal with a bereavement or a loss of some sort? These issues and many others can throw us off course in life, momentarily losing ourselves. Or maybe more simply, there is a curiosity and desire to get to know yourself better.

I believe that we have it within ourselves to figure out a way forward. The Counselling process will always be at your pace, we will work through things as they come up for you. I will never direct you, I will always be guided by you. I am the passenger on your journey and you are very much the driver. I work on the understanding that you are the expert in you, you may just need a little support to bring that expert to fruition.

It takes strength to seek change in our life and often in order for change, we need to be the ones to change. Counselling can be a good starting point on this journey. Gaining a deeper self-awareness of ourselves is the best tool, this greater understanding of one's self can help us look at things differently and offer personal growth. I provide a space for authentic connection where together we can begin to explore and understand your inner world, figuring out what is important to you and the various parts of your life that are troubling you.

Our mental wellbeing is an integral part of our lives. Therefore, I am interested in you as an individual and what matters to you. My role is not to judge but to support you in finding your individual path to positive wellbeing. I wish for all my clients to live the best life possible and to feel more at peace.

Although counselling may not be for everyone, in my experience feedback from clients who have engaged in this type of therapy has proven very positive and often life changing. The amount of sessions required will be unique to each client. For some, short term work helps them to move forward quickly whilst others benefit from longer term help. I can help with a range of issues including anxiety, depression, relationship issues, self-esteem, loss & bereavement, stress and those feeling generally overwhelmed with life.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am qualified Counsellor with a Diploma in Person Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy. I have worked in the mental health sector for several years and I currently volunteer for CrossReach. As a former hairdresser of 25 years I felt very privileged when clients felt able to talk openly with me. In 2010 I enrolled in an Introduction to Counselling Skills course where I discovered the true art of listening. This gave me the foundation to build my knowledge and skills before returning to complete the Diploma some years later.

I have worked in the Health & Social Care sector for over 12 years. I currently work as a Family Wellbeing Worker, prior to this I worked as a Senior GP Mental Health Link Worker which saw me based in various GP practices across Moray. The nature of my work has enabled me to attend extensive training in most aspects of Mental Health & Wellbeing.  For a more extensive list of my qualifications and training please visit my website www.newdawn-counselling.co.uk

Further information

Your counselling sessions can be delivered in a way that works best for you.  We can work together via:

Telephone

If you find it hard to take time out for yourself telephone counselling could be the answer. You choose a suitable time slot for me to call you. We can talk whilst you remain in the comfort of your own home, car or even whilst you are out walking. All you require is a phone and a private space. Telephone Counselling saves you travelling time and costs.

Online

Online Counselling can slot in to your busy life and save you travelling time and costs. It has the additional bonus of being able to see one another which may help you express yourself more fully. I provide a very accessible, easy to use system.

Face to Face

Face to Face Counselling eliminates any need for technology and can offer you a complete change of scene if you would find this helpful. I offer a private safe space, free from distractions.

Walk & Talk

Being out in the fresh air has so many benefits, walking can reduce levels of stress, depression and anxiety. You might be more comfortable without direct face to face contact and find it easier to open up with walk & talk. You as the client will set the pace of the walk on a pre-risk assessed route.

Each session lasts 50 minutes. Our first session will be an opportunity for you to decide whether I am the right counsellor for you. I will explain how I work and explore what your expectations are. I will be interested in finding out a little more about you and your reasons for seeking counselling at this time. You are under no obligation to continue should I not be the right counsellor for you. I can offer weekday, evening and weekend sessions via telephone, online video and walk & talk settings. I offer a free 15 minute consultation before your first session, call or send me an email to arrange an appointment.
