About me

I aim to offer a confidential, empathic space via live video (Zoom) or phone, in which you can explore whatever is important to you without being judged. I aim to provide a safe place where you can recognise and build on your strengths and resources.

Integrative counselling can allow you space to explore issues, giving you a chance to build a better understanding of yourself and your relationships.

My training is broad, which means that I can draw my theoretical knowledge from various therapeutic approaches: person-centred counselling (BACP accredited), Yoga Therapy (IAYT), mindfulness (Mindfulness Scotland), Psychodynamic Art Psychotherapy (in training) and CBT (in training). I offer therapy that emphasises the importance of the relationship between client and counsellor whilst using skills and techniques that are appropriate for each individual at any given time in their life. I am happy working with all age groups. I have extensive teaching experience and am happy to work with teens (over 11 years). I also specialise in working with neurodiversity, particularly dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and ASD. I currently work online with adults.

If you decide to work with me, we will talk about what you need and then there will be space for you to explore your past and how it impacts you today. When you are ready, we can set some goals and practices for you to try out in between sessions.

Art Therapy, Yoga Therapy, and/or CBT can support you as you discover the tools you need to make the changes you seek.

I am looking forward to getting to know you!

Training, qualifications & experience

I started as a teacher of History before moving into special educational needs working both in the UK and overseas. My experience and qualifications in neurodiversity allow me to offer diagnostic assessments for dyslexia, dyspraxia /DCD, and screen for ADHD. I have a PGCE, a Masters in Education, a conversion degree in Psychology, and a Masters in creative writing.

I trained as a counsellor in 1993 and have used my skills in various professional roles. I am accredited by the BACP. I completed my IAYT Yoga Therapy training in 2023, and am currently training as an Art Psychotherapist as well as training as a CBT Psychotherapist. I am a graduate member of the British Psychological Society.

Experience:

I have used my counselling skills working as a Guidance teacher, focussing mostly on post-16 students. I have worked extensively with neurodiverse children and adults and offer full diagnostic assessments for various SpLDs. I have worked extensively online and also offer counselling through Better Help.

I live on the Cowal peninsula in Scotland, where I  offer online services to clients via video or phone.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

I offer a free 15-minute consultation, bookable via my website - www.blended-counselling-dyslexiaassessment.com.

If you decide to go ahead with therapy, your first session will offer a chance for us both to get to know each other and talk about what to expect from your therapy journey. I will ask you a few questions and together, we will decide on the best way forward.

We might work in a client-centred way where listening and positive regard are the main focus, we might work by planning and setting goals and practices in between sessions, or we might use art or yoga to help you understand what is going on for you and how best to change the things you would like.

Therapy with me will offer you a chance to explore where you are just now and where you want to go so that you can make the changes you want in your life.

I work online because I live in a rural part of Scotland. Phone calls are another option, and can work well too. Online work offers you the chance to work from the privacy of your own home. All you need is a device with Zoom downloaded and a space where you will not be disturbed for an hour. Most clients come for weekly one-hour sessions, but I am happy to be flexible to meet your needs.

I am looking forward to getting to know you.
