About me

Hi, I'm Andrew, a fully qualified and registered Counsellor.

I offer face-to-face individual counselling sessions to adults and adolescents. I offer sessions in both Poyntzpass and Belfast.

Issues I have experience working with include:

Anxiety, depression, work-related stress, education-related stress, anger issues, relationship-related issues, family issues, life changes and challenges, bereavement and grief and self-harm.

As a Counsellor I support people to become more aware both of what isn’t working for them and of the other possibilities present in their lives. Perhaps you are dissatisfied, worried or unhappy at work or at home; distressed about your future life path, or about your relationships personal or professional. You may be struggling to find anything meaningful, enjoyable, or fulfilling in your life. I support people to re-discover and uncover capacities and strengths and to acquire the support they need, to seek the life they want.

I would like to offer you an invitation to work with me to raise your awareness of the possibilities present in your own life for more satisfaction, confidence, meaning and enjoyment.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a Masters Degree in Counselling and Therapeutic Communication. I am currently undertaking further Advanced Clinical Training as a Gestalt Practitioner. I also hold Bachelors Degrees in both Psychology.

I am a fully qualified Counsellor and registered member of BACP, I am listed on an accredited register and abide by BACP’s Code of Ethics. I have provided support to adults and adolescents across various roles in the public and voluntary sectors for over 20 years.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

My Humanistic-Integrative approach:

First and foremost, as a Counsellor I seek to offer a supportive relationship. For me, Counselling is an invitation not to be alone in our distress. It is the possibility of human connection when it is perhaps most difficult to find in our lives and yet when we might benefit most from it. This support can offer an opportunity to uncover or re-discover our own capacity and strength. Once we feel safe and strong enough it can also offer an opportunity to learn and develop.

We all learn to ‘be’ in certain ways in the world. These are ways that somehow ‘work’ for us in our unique and sometimes challenging life circumstances. Frequently we are not even aware of these patterns. As we move through life however they can stop working for us and we become acutely aware of the resulting distress. Such distress is frequently labelled depression, anxiety, addiction, anger issues, bereavement and in many other ways also. It shows up in relationship issues with family, peers or colleagues, as stress at work, self-harming, struggles with life changes and transitions.

Through Counselling we can raise our awareness of what isn’t working for us anymore and other possible ways of being. We can raise our awareness of what might be ‘getting in the way’ of these other possibilities and about the support we might need for ourselves. We may even then, with sufficient safety and support, begin to experiment with these other possibilities – within our Counselling and potentially in our lives.
