About me

I'm Alec, an Integrative Psychotherapist working in London and online.

I work ‘integratively’, meaning I integrate what I consider the most effective therapeutic approaches (compassion-focused, body psychotherapy, CBT, parts work) within a talking-therapy framework embedded in existential & humanistic values and psychodynamic theory. I find that this approach can get to the heart of most mental health challenges in a safe and helpful way.

I’m interested in the impact that trauma and challenging life experiences can have on our mind, body and nervous system and have completed extensive training in this area.

Until we work them through, past experiences can keep us feeling stuck, repeating old patterns and limiting who we can be. I offer a warm, safe and supportive space where we can begin to talk about your present challenges, explore them through the lens of your past, identify and work on patterns that might be causing you difficulty, and ultimately, help you to develop new and more fulfilling ways of being in the world.

At the very heart of it all will be our working relationship, based upon trust and respect. Here you will have the space to be yourself and feel heard, seen & listened to. If our relationship feels safe and comfortable then the work will happen. Within this dynamic, I sometimes enjoy incorporating playfulness and humour (when appropriate) and I may also (with your permission) challenge you when necessary.

Areas that I specialise in include: trauma, addiction, inner child work, attachment and relational wounds, intimacy and relational challenges, sexual issues, anxiety and other emotional dysregulation, self-confidence & self-compassion.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am professionally trained, registered and accredited with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). Being accredited means I have been recognised by BACP for reaching high standards of knowledge, experience and development in counselling and psychotherapy.

I hold over 10 years’ experience of working in different roles within mental health settings, including acute psychiatric wards, community prisons, the charity sector and in private practice.

I have practiced at Mind in the City, Hackney and Waltham Forest on their IAPT service, working with people from diverse backgrounds on a wide range of psychological issues.

I am an experienced group facilitator and facilitate men’s groups on a regular basis. I have also facilitated groups aimed at supporting people to better manage and overcome challenges in relation to anxiety, trauma & anger, and groups working with women who have experienced sexual and domestic violence.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
