About me

Am I the right counsellor for you?

Do you have something that is  affecting your wellbeing, how you are functioning in the world and your feelings of self-worth? It may be a difficult relationship, a traumatic event, a debilitating illness, for you or for a loved one, or life changing loss and grief.

I work with a number of issues, however my area of personal expertise is in  abusive personal or work relationships with a focus on narcissistically abusive relationships. Together we can work to get to grips with the reality of your experience which can help you begin to return overworked safety systems to normal functioning. This is crucial to reducing your trauma.

Realising that a relationship that you once considered normal - is far from it - can cause a form of grief; grief at the loss of what you thought you had and grief over what you may lose. You need to feel safe and have confidence in your counsellor to work through complex emotions and difficult experiences. The feedback that I get from my clients is that I work with insight, responsiveness, compassion and complete focus on you. Together we can work  to understand your grief and validate your experience and the impact it is having on your life, physical and mental health, wellbeing and your other relationships.  I can help you reduce your trauma, re-discover your sense of self and self-worth and find your strengths.

Although I have a focus on narcissism and difficult relationships, due to my life experience I also counsel for a number of issues as mentioned below.  Please  email me now on susielizabethcounselling@outlook.com to book an initial free half hour online session to find out if I am right for you.

How do I work?

My core training is in a humanistic integrative approach. This may well mean absolutely nothing to you if you have not searched out a counsellor before. What it does mean is that I am trained in a number of different modalities and can be flexible to fit your changing needs as you come to feel changes throughout our time together. You and your needs remain at the centre of everything we do together because, although you may not feel it at the moment, you are the expert in your life, not me.

Where and when do I work?

I work in person, or online, from a light and discreet counselling room in Hungerford, West Berkshire from 9am to 6.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Wednesdays until 7.30pm is reserved for online clients as you may wish to come to counselling from further afield.

Training, qualifications & experience

To further help you choose.

You may feel that you need to know a little bit about what informs me; what I bring in terms of life experience in order to help you choose. I came to qualify as a counsellor later in life from a background of nearly twenty years as a senior nurse in an acute field in the NHS, whilst also helping people cope with the psychological aspects of life limiting conditions. To this end I can also help with those suffering from life changing and life limiting conditions, grief and the grief of loss surrounding the changes in relationships due to illness. I can also help those working in stressful situations within a health environment.

A difficult time in my life taught me the transformative ability of working with a counsellor in a space where I felt completely safe to explore and begin to understand my experience and my, not always helpful, responses. This inspired me to change career and undergo the four years of training to get to a place where a feel able to give the gift that I received. I now am impassioned to pass on the knowledge that I received to help you live your life in the way you wish to live it.

To me, therapy is partially about unravelling. Unravelling experiences, relationships and emotions. This can then provide the platform for a rebuild of your self.  After unravelling the reasons behind emotions and behaviours and developing self-compassion - then true, helpful and lasting change can occur.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
