About me

Are you struggling with anxiety or depression that has been a part of your life far too long? Have you tried counselling or CBT but it hasn’t resolved your problem? Are you ready to explore your life’s experiences to finally get to the bottom of your symptoms? If so I’d love to hear from you. My name is Dr Steve Hoole, I’m a Clinical Psychologist with a decade’s experience of helping people just like you; in the NHS, charity sector and in private practice. I specialise in working with longstanding anxiety, depression and early relationship difficulties, helping clients understand how their past impacts the life they want to live.

I am trained to doctoral level in a variety of therapies, however I draw predominantly on psychodynamic approaches and attachment theory when working with clients. This means helping a person to look at how their early life experiences and relationships shape the ways in which they relate to themselves and others, and how this may be causing their problems.

Over the years I have helped many people to take back control of their lives from problems and build the life they want to live. Working together to build insight and develop new ways of coping, has led to many life-changing outcomes. If you are ready to take your own first step towards change, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Three steps to booking your first session:

  1. Please either call direct on the number above, or use the 'Message me' tab to request a call back. I will spend up to 15 minutes with you on the telephone, free of charge, discussing what the main issues are and how I might be able to help.
  2. If we agree that we can work together, we can book in a time for a first appointment - you will receive email and text confirmations along with a video link if we are meeting virtually.
  3. I will then email you some documents to review and complete securely online, prior to our first session, detailing what I offer so that you can be 100% sure about proceeding. These must be returned in advance for the initial session to go ahead.

Training, qualifications & experience

I graduated from the University of Leeds in 2014 with a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and specialise in psychodynamic approaches to therapy in order to get to the root of people's issues and begin the healing process.

Doctoral level training includes a variety of therapeutic approaches, which means that I am not limited by a specific type of therapy; I draw on elements of mindfulness, narrative therapy and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) where needed, but my main models are short term psychodynamic psychotherapy and attachment focussed therapy. Through assessment and formulation, we can however work together to find the best therapy approach for you.

I have extensive experience in both the public and charity sectors, having been a Senior Clinical Psychologist in an NHS secondary care setting (severe and enduring mental health), the Coordinator of Clinical Services for a Manchester based charity, as well as having experience of the private sector as a Clinical Lead for a one of the largest private healthcare companies in the UK. In addition to my own private practice, I now once again work in the NHS as a community based Clinical Lead.

In the last few years, I have been working more online and in order to ensure quality and excellence I have undertaken further training in online and telephone counselling, accredited by the Association for Counselling and Therapy Online (ACTO). I am an ACTO Professional Member (Level 2) and offer online therapy within my private practice in addition to face-to-face.
