About me

BACP Registered Counsellor / Psychotherapist

I am a fully qualified Integrative Counsellor working across Devon and Cornwall with Adults and young people. Lots of us feel more comfortable about talking to a therapist or counsellor these days but how to know which counsellor is the right one? As a Deaf person who can be flexible between BSL and spoken English, I have experience of the cultural issues and potential challenges. I know how important it is to find the right counsellor to help you get back on track.

What I offer:

Counselling and psychotherapy (short term and long term), offers much needed space where we can explore issues without judgement. I offer Humanistic and cognitive behavioural therapy, using a range of theories and modules to match individual need.

I am able to work with:

  • Deaf people who prefer BSL
  • People who are Hard of Hearing
  • Friends, family such as new parents of Deaf children
  • Siblings, Children of Deaf adults (CODA),
  • Partners of Deaf people
  • Professionals
  • Carers

Anyone who wishes to have a better understanding about deafness.

Training, qualifications & experience

Over the last two decades, I have worked with Deaf people at Living Options Devon where I offer free counselling sessions for Deaf / BSL (only in Devon) and for Deaf4Deaf on a national level, both face to face and online (video calls).

I have also achieved an award for being a Devon Diamond 2022 for the work that I do within the Devon Deaf Community. I have delivered many Deaf Awareness Trainings and BSL to educate people on how to connect with Deaf Communities - https://www.devoncommunities.org.uk/devon-diamond-justine-smyth

  • Advanced Specialist Diploma in Psychotherapy (Level 5 equivalent)
  • Advanced Diploma in Counselling (Level 4 equivalent)
  • Advanced Specialist working Therapeutically with young people (Completing October 2023)
  • British Sign Language NVQ Level 6

I attend regular CPD courses to increase my awareness, knowledge and skills.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
