About me

** I have limited availability at the moment.  I have only Thursday 1.15pm and 4pm fortnightly available**

I'm a fully qualified counsellor and a registered member of the BACP and the NCPS.  I have supported people through many different presenting issues.  I have worked with a variety of people from very diverse backgrounds.  I have over 25 years experience of working in the helping professions.  I was a teacher before I transferred my skills and knowledge to counselling.

As everyone is unique my approach is never 'one size fits all'.  Working with me is very much a collaboration.  My way of working is understanding your life history and how this impacts on your present life.  I work by deploying research backed techniques, interventions and sharing key theory concepts that change the way you approach situations and your understanding of self and others in your life.  I make the counselling experience very accessible and clearly understood.

Many of my clients have worked through their struggles with life, relationships and work because of all kinds of reasons including anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, suicidal thoughts, feeling low, let down, imposter syndrome, anger, panic attacks, feelings of isolation, trauma/PTSD, bereavement, self-harm,  and feelings of being in a rut.

How do they achieve this? Through us listening, questioning, being curious, negotiating goals.  And me consistently showing professionalism, knowledge, warmth and attentiveness.  It's a huge part of my personality...to make you feel informed, safe and valued.

I am a professional but I'm thought of as a very down to earth person.  What you see is what you get type person!  I don't use jargon or try to bamboozle you!  I am passionate about equality.  What I'm about to say may sound unusual, but I do bring therapeutic laughter into the counselling room. Sometimes laughter can bring about change in itself and it is an important part of who I am and how I connect so well with my clients.  It's also a way of calming the autonomic nervous system so you can feel grounded, particularly after a session that has been especially difficult.

I think I should add that counselling is not a process to be worried about. It isn't something that will add to your stress and anxiety. Yes, sometimes you can feel worse before you feel better, but the beauty of counselling is that I'll be there with you. But it's hard isn't it, trying to find the right counsellor for you.  I'd advise you to go with your gut and if you feel I might be the right counsellor for you, give me a call and we'll go from there.

I have two very safe, private and comfortable rooms I work from.  I do offer remote counselling too.

I am very honest and if I feel I am not the right person for you, I'll support you in signposting you elsewhere.  But I'd like to think you will also be honest and if you feel I'm not for you, then tell me, I won't be upset!

I offer a specialist service to teachers, , trainee teachers, undergraduates, post graduates and trainee counsellors.  I offer counselling to young people aged 13+.

About me:

Throughout my career (as a teacher in a senior position, counsellor and counselling tutor) I have taught, mentored, coached and counselled individuals and teams of people.  It's been a real highlight of my working life.

I am now well into my third decade of supporting people.  I combine counselling and teaching.  I have for the past couple of years moved into teaching counselling to adult learners.  For two reasons.  I think it's really important to support people coming into the profession to be excellent practitioners.  To be well prepared for the important work ahead of them.  Secondly, to keep myself and them up to date with developments within the profession.

Training, qualifications & experience

Experience:

My passion for supporting others through trying times and helping them grow and gain mental strength and fortitude, led me to change careers and become an integrative counsellor. Counselling many people with different presenting issues.  I support people from all walks of life, professions and ages.  Teachers and those in high demanding public sector jobs are a special interest of mine.

I have spent several decades in education, mentoring and coaching.  I have a vast amount of experience in supporting others.  I began teaching in the late 90's and moved through many management roles.  Leading and coaching teams, new teachers and trainees.  I ended my secondary teaching as a Director of Teacher Training.

Teaching is still a love of mine and I continue to teach but this time round Counselling Studies up to Level 4.  I have found that my continued involvement in teaching specifically counselling, extends my knowledge base of developments in the counselling profession and relevant CPD.

I have worked for several counselling agencies including supporting those with fertility issues and baby loss, life limiting illness (cancer) and support for those supporting a loved one through cancer, a low cost counselling agency for those experiencing low to moderate risk.  I am also a sessional mental health support officer counselling university students.  I am a registered member of the BACP and the National Counselling Society.

The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
