About me

Hello and thank you for taking the time to look at my profile.

Having the support of a family member or friend can be invaluable but sometimes we may limit what we say to them for fear of being judged or worrying about over-burdening them.  Having someone impartial to talk to without these barriers can therefore be extremely helpful.

My take on counselling is pretty straightforward. It’s about providing a safe space for you to talk about anything you feel is troubling you or holding you back from moving forward. A space in which you can explore thoughts and feelings, try and make sense of what’s going on and find some tools and answers to make some positive steps.

Counselling is a collaborative process and fostering a trusting relationship between counsellor and client is key. I don’t have a magic wand and I’m not an expert on your life but I can listen without judgement, perhaps offer a different perspective or occasionally a gentle challenge.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a fully qualified BACP accredited counsellor with over 20 years experience of working with a wide and diverse range of clients in a variety of settings including higher education,  private and voluntary sectors.

I have a Post-graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy.  I was trained initially in the person-centred approach and have received additional training in CBT and Transactional Analysis which I sometimes incorporate as part of my work with clients.

Before qualifying as a counsellor I spent 10 years working in industry in a variety of roles.  I have a degree in History & English and an MA in English and Creative Writing.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
