About me

I'm a fully qualified, highly experienced counsellor and psychotherapist based in Basingstoke, Hampshire. My approach is a personal one, offering a respectful, thoughtful and non-judgemental professional relationship.

With 25 years experience, I have worked with a wide variety of people and concerns.

What is counselling for?

Counselling can be about better understanding your thoughts, feelings and relationships. It can be about changing how you feel about yourself or a situation, or finding new meaning in life. It might be about the past or the present, the loss of someone or something, dealing with traumatic experiences, or feeling stuck in ongoing circumstances, whether that's in work, family life, or just in how you feel in yourself.

It can be a place to find hope during difficult times, or somewhere to tackle a specific problem. If you feel stressed, anxious, depressed or confused, then counselling can often help.

Where do I work?

I work in a comfortable, quiet and discreet office in a building where other therapists work in Chequers Road, Basingstoke, close to the shopping centre and bus/train stations. There is free roadside parking nearby.

What happens now?

Just get in touch - email, text or call is fine - and we can arrange an initial session. I usually respond to enquiries within a day or two. If you email (or use the contact form and request an email response) but don't hear back after a few days, please check your junk folder.

Please see my website for more information about counselling, how I work and my fees. And if you have any questions, please let me know.

Confidentiality

Counselling is confidential. This means I will not disclose any information about you without your consent. Please see my website for more information on privacy, confidentiality and the possible exceptions. If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have 25 years post-qualification experience as a counsellor and psychotherapist. In 1999, I completed a BACP accredited Post-Graduate Diploma in person-centred therapy at the University of East Anglia and have since undertaken many other professional development activities. Most recently, I completed the Core and Therapeutic Supervision trainings at the Centre for Supervision & Team Development (CSTD), London.

Experience

I've worked in a variety of settings, including private practice, further education, an adult crisis centre, a youth counselling service, a university, a sexual abuse helpline, and a prison.

For many years I managed the counselling services for two Hampshire colleges of further and higher education, and now run a private counselling, psychotherapy and supervision practice in Basingstoke.

In 2024, I received a 'Lifetime Achievement' accolade from the Therapists Connect network.

Publications

Since qualifying, I have written regularly about the world of counselling and psychotherapy, publishing articles, columns, reviews and book chapters. For two years I was Ethical Dilemmas editor for the journal Self & Society and I'm the co-author of the latest edition of the textbook First Steps in Counselling - An Introductory Companion (PCCS Books, 2021). You can see a list of published work at my website.

Professional membership

I'm a Registered Member (MBACP) of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (register no. 56904) and am fully insured.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
