Training, qualifications & experience
We are qualified, experienced counsellors and carry Diplomas in Counselling.
Cheryl Scammells I am a qualified integrative counsellor who has worked professionally for many years as a counsellor, supervisor and trainer. I was employed in the alcohol and drug field for nearly 30 years and for 20 years in the provision of an employee counselling service. Throughout these years, I have had the privilege of working with very many people on a wide variety of issues that were causing them stress, distress, anguish, anger, confusion or anxiety. I integrate and combine parts of several therapeutic approaches, with a strong foundation of Motivational Interviewing. Motivational Interviewing itself is an integrative approach – a humanistic, evidence-based therapy that helps people understand, challenge and change problematic behaviours. Elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can be very helpful in identifying, understanding and modifying entrenched patterns of unhelpful thinking, whilst Existential Therapy focuses on exploring the challenges and paradoxes of human existence and the search for meaning and purpose.
Lucy Emlyn-Jones I am a qualified integrative counsellor and during my extensive career I have worked with a very wide range of people around issues such as alcohol and drug concerns, anxiety and depression, bereavement, low self-esteem, childhood abuse and post-traumatic stress. I believe that each person I see is unique and will have their own solutions to the problems they face. I draw on a range of approaches such as solution-focussed, existential and cognitive behavioural therapy which allow me to respond flexibly to my client’s particular situation and needs. I am greatly informed by the values and skills of Motivational Interviewing; a strengths-based, respectful approach aimed at helping people make positive changes in their lives. My focus is on creating a trusting, respectful relationship and through skilful, active listening giving people the space to explore their situation and gain deeper understanding. This approach provides the opportunity for my clients to stand back, clarify issues, make links and identify a way forward.
Maeve Keenoy I am a qualified person-centred counsellor. I provide a safe, confidential environment where you are able to constructively explore any issues that are causing you difficulties. I believe that by building a strong therapeutic relationship and working collaboratively there is potential to increase self-awareness, understanding and confidence which can lead to clarity, insight and change. As well as working with adults I have extensive experience of working with young people aged 16-25.
Member organisations *
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).
Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.
Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.
All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
