About me

Hi, my name is Una and I am an integrative counsellor currently offering online counselling.

My counselling service is directed to clients who have difficulties attending sessions in person and need the benefit of one to one support from the convenience of their own home. This can make all the difference to anyone who is housebound or lives remotely/rurally.

Our work together will be within an integrative framework. This means I use three approaches and tailor them to your needs. The first approach is person-centred which offers you safe, non-judgemental understanding. The second is psycho-dynamic which helps you to connect and move on from past experiences that may be causing difficulty in the present and the third is cognitive behavioural which focuses on changing old patterns and behaviours using tools and interventions.

Sessions last for 50 minutes and the length of the process will depend on your needs. I offer short term or long term therapy.

I am registered with the BACP (British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists) which means I abide by their ethical principles and professional standards at all times. I engage with regular independent supervision which keeps my practice safe and accountable and I am committed to continued professional development through ongoing training and study which keeps my practice up to date on developments within the counselling world.

I am committed to equality and diversity in my practice and welcome all identities and communities.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have an FSc degree in Integrative Counselling and my recent professional development includes training on suicide awareness (ASIST); Domestic Abuse Awareness (LDVP); Parental Alienation Awareness (LDVP); Practical Strategies for Interventions around Addiction (BACP) and ongoing BACP training including the neuroscience of trauma and trauma informed approaches.

I trained with the La Dolce Vita Project (My Family Matters Foundation) where I supported clients who had experienced family breakdown due to domestic abuse; and parents experiencing separation from their children. This work focused on supporting the client with their emotional needs, grief work and practical strategies to support self-care and connection with their children within difficult circumstances.

I also trained at a doctor’s surgery supporting clients referred through their doctor for a range of issues including anxiety and depression; displacement due to migration; social isolation; bereavement; grief and loss.

My recent work has included presenting group workshops on ‘Resilience’ for the LIFERaft project NI. These explored a range of tools and strategies used to nurture resilience at home and in the workplace including CBT techniques designed to deepen understanding on the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviours; polyvagal understanding and approaches; mindfulness and meditation and self-awareness and self-care plans.

I have also been working as a co-facilitator on the RISE Foundation’s Family Programme for families of persons in addiction. This included helping clients to detach from their loved ones in addiction and focus on their own self-care and recovery.

I am experienced with clients working a 12 step recovery programme for a range of addictions.

I have a B.A Degree and an M.A. Degree in Fine Art and a P.G.C.E. in secondary education.

I have worked for many years as a teacher. My specialism was Art and Special Needs and I was awarded the status of ‘Chartered London Teacher’ in London’s inner city.

Contact me by phone or email and we can have a 30 minute free session where we can discuss what is causing you distress in the present and how we might plan to work together.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
