About us

Please note that our waiting list is currently closed until further notice.

Our aim during counselling at Sycamore Counselling Service is to enable positive change through a professional caring relationship, working within clearly agreed boundaries.   The service is offered regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ethnic or cultural background, to people of any faith or none.  We work with adults on an individual basis, and do not currently offer couples counselling or family therapy.

Each counsellor has a different way of working depending on their training and model used, and all are trained to Diploma level or above.  Our counsellors are Christians and are motivated by their faith to seek to serve the community.  Whilst all those working at Sycamore share a world view that is drawn from the Christian faith, there is no expectation that clients will hold the same world view.

We hold membership with either the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) or the Association of Christian Counsellors (ACC).

Training, qualifications & experience

Each of our counsellors is professionally qualified, and are Registered members with either BACP or ACC. We also commit to keep our training up-to-date, in line with the requirements of our professional bodies, and undertake a wide variety of training courses throughout the year.

We have a broad range of experience between us, working in charitable organisations and private practice. We each have 10 years experience or more, and work with a variety of issues.

Member organisations *

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

ACC
Association for Christian Counsellors (ACC)

The Association of Christian Counsellors and Linked Professions is a professional body representing and setting standards for Christian counselling and care in the UK. The organisation is made up of various different membership categories, including Counsellor and Accredited, and requires all members working as counsellors to undertake Continuous Professional Development on a regular basis.

We have verified that at least one professional at this organisation is registered with the relevant professional body.
