About me

I am currently offering face to face counselling and online counselling via Zoom. Counselling mediated by technology is a different experience to working together in a room. Both approaches however have advantages and are a matter of individual choice depending on a variety of factors. If you would find it helpful to talk through which approach might be best for you please contact me.

If you are reading this you are probably looking for someone to help you sort out a problem of some kind.
I have been a counsellor for more than 25 years working with people of all ages and from all walks of life. My aim is to support individuals and couples to explore their experience and make positive change in their lives.

I believe that the most important aspect of the work is to have a good relationship with your counsellor so that you feel able to talk about anything that concerns you however difficult, painful or embarrassing you may feel it is. I aim to work creatively with what you bring. I offer a safe space in which you can explore any issues that are troubling you.
I am trained as an integrative counsellor and I believe in working in a way that best suits you, I work in a confidential way in line with the ethical guidelines of the BACP and UKCP.
It can be hard to take the first step towards counselling. I am always willing to speak with you on the 'phone before you make the decision about whether to come to see me.

About Counselling

Counselling is a very individual experience. You may only need a brief period of counselling to feel better, or perhaps you feel you want to spend a longer time exploring your inner world. I offer both brief dynamic therapy and open ended counselling and we would discuss what is right for you. As well as offering one to one counselling I also work with couples.

I specialise in relationship difficulties, personal growth and life transitions,. I also work with people who have experienced trauma, whether that is a one off traumatic event or more sustained difficult life events (e.g. abuse or neglect in childhood or abusive adult relationships). I am interested in neurodiversity (e.g. ADHD and ADD) and managing anxiety.

My background in mental health nursing means that I am also able to work with people who have more complex mental health needs.

About Online Counselling

As a trained Online therapist I am able to offer 3 different forms of  online counselling. As well as using Zoom to offer counselling via Video I also offer the options of Instant Messaging using Signal ( similar to WhatsApp, but more secure) or email exchanges. If you would like more information on any of these please contact me and I will send you descriptions of the different approaches. I am happy to discuss which one might be best suited to your needs.

Couples Counselling

Coming to counselling as a couple is a different experience from individual work. I will aim to help you to tell each other how you are feeling and what you each are finding difficult in the relationship. We would then work together on finding a way forward that is right for both of you. I am able to offer Couples counselling via Zoom. I do not offer IM or email options for couples.

Student Counsellors

As an experienced therapist and trainer I am able to offer therapy for students during their training. I offer a reduced rate for student counsellors since I understand the many financial commitments required during training. My qualifications are suitable for students studying on integrative or psychodynamic courses.

A Note on Stress and Anxiety

Increasing numbers of people are experiencing stress and anxiety. These can produce a negative effect on both physical and mental well being and put a strain on relationships. As a counsellor I cannot take away difficult or stressful circumstances in your life, but many people find that talking things through with someone who will listen carefully, without trying to offer solutions, can help them to find a new more helpful perspective, enabling them to cope better with the challenges life brings. Sometimes overwhelming anxiety can be a sign of unrecognised trauma, or other mental health or neurodiverse issues.

A Note on Trauma

Over the last 10 years research has increasingly indicated a link between trauma and both physical and emotional difficulties. There are many different types of trauma and also an increasing variety of ways to work with trauma. Some like neuro-feedback are relatively new, others like Yoga are based on ancient wisdom. Counselling can often be a useful starting point in identifying trauma and exploring the most appropriate ways to address it. As well as a psychodynamic approach to understanding trauma I also use Polyvagal theory and Internal Family Systems theory to help individuals to understand their experiences and as a way of working with the effects of trauma.

Flexible Times

Although counselling normally takes place at the same time and day each week, this can make it difficult for people who work shifts to come for counselling. I therefore aim to offer flexible appointments for people whose personal circumstances make it impossible for them to attend at a regular time,

Therapy Room

I work in a quiet and comfortable purpose built room which provides a private and tranquil space. There is parking outside. I am located on the outskirts of Storrington.

If you would like to find out more about having counselling with me please call me, text me or email me and I will respond as quickly as possible. In addition if you have questions about how remote counselling can work or about fees during this time when many people have found their income affected, please contact me.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.

Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.

All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

UK Council for Psychotherapy

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

Further information

People often wonder how 'just talking' to someone else can help when things are difficult. I start with the idea that just being properly listened to can help you to get a clearer idea of what is happening and become more mindful of yourself.
Counselling is not a 'quick fix' but an investment in you.
