About me

Dr Stephanie Gray is a counselling psychologist who works with individual adults with a wide range of issues and problems including; anxiety; low mood/depression; stress; assertiveness; bereavement/grief; self-harm; eating and body image issues; life transitions; obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD); relationship issues; and many more issues.

I have a particular interest in those experiencing low self-esteem.

I work in what is described an 'assimilative integrative' approach, ultimately this means having a Person-Centred base and then integrating elements from a number of evidence-based approaches including Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in order to meet the needs and preferences of each individual. For you, this means that the therapy you are provided with is completely tailored to your specific needs as they change.

I believe that everyone has the potential for growth and change and that the therapeutic relationship is an essential part of the client's journey.

I aim to provide a warm, supportive, and non-judgmental approach to therapy where people feel safe to explore areas of their lives that they are struggling with.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have worked in a number of settings over the years including at the Health Agency Counselling Service; at local primary schools; GP centres and in various locked facilities including that of low secure psychiatric services.

In addition to private work, I am currently employed with NHS borders as a locum psychologist. I am also working closely with the speciality of Alcohol related brain damage. Within this role, I mainly work on service innovation, delivering groups and having a more practical role within addiction.

I currently hold a DPsych in Counselling Psychology from Glasgow Caledonian University, an MSc in Counselling and Psychotherapy and a PG Certificate in Listening Skills (COSCA) - both from the University of Edinburgh. In addition, I acquired a BSc (Hons) in Psychology from Sheffield.

I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and a member of the British Psychological Society (BPS). The HCPC specifically, you may only be allowed to register if you hold the title of psychologist. What does this mean to you, well it means that you can rest assured knowing that a formal governing body has accredited my training.

Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.

They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.

Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.
