About me

Hi, I’m Steph.  I’m a qualified integrative counsellor and a registered member of the BACP.

I passionately believe in the transformative power of counselling to change lives and it is a privilege to see the impact this has on allowing people to live more positive lives. Making the decision to reach out and come to counselling is the first step towards beginning to feel better.

I offer a warm, compassionate and confidential space for you to talk about difficult or painful feelings, thoughts and experiences.

I have experience of working with a wide range of clients with a variety of backgrounds and issues.  I offer individual therapy to adults, either online or on the telephone.  I am also a counselling lecturer and have worked in education for almost 20 years.

How counselling can help

Does it feel like you are “going through the motions” in your life, without really understanding where you are going or where you have arrived?  Do you feel like you need to talk, but no one really hears what you are saying?

Life can be challenging and overwhelming at times but having time and a safe place to explore emotions and past and present experiences can allow you relief and understanding of self.    This self-awareness provides the ability to be able to challenge negative thoughts and patterns of behaviour, in order to improve your future mental and emotional well-being.

What to expect

My focus is to provide a calm and safe space that allows you to feel at ease and able to talk about what is affecting you, without fear of judgement.  I will really listen to you and respect how you experience the world and the events that have happened to you.  This will ideally allow you to connect with your real and authentic self.  Feeling heard can help to make sense of thoughts, feelings and experiences and empower you to make the choices that will make your life happier.

My experience as an integrative counsellor means that I use a bespoke blend of therapeutic approaches based on the needs of each client.  A trusting working relationship is at the heart of this, but I will draw from approaches such as humanistic, psychodynamic, CBT.  The approach we will take will depend on what is the right fit for you.

What may I help with?

Stress, anxiety, depression, bereavement, low self-esteem, low self-confidence, family/relationship issues, trauma, attachment issues.

Training, qualifications & experience

  • PG Dip in Integrative Psychotherapy
  • Level 3 Diploma in Counselling Studies
  • Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills
  • MA (Hons) in Professional Development (Disability Studies)

I currently lecture in counselling, but I have worked as a lecturer in further and higher education for almost 20 years, as well as experience working as a tutor and mentor for the learning support team. I have understanding of a variety of issues related to neurodiversity and disability.  I also work as a counsellor for a charitable organisation, offering counselling for issues such as anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, as well as clients in recovery from substance and alcohol misuse

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
