About me

Hello, I'm Shirley and I am a fully qualified and accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist (now called CBT Practitioner). I deliver Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) online and by telephone as studies have shown online therapy to be as effective as face-to-face therapy. You may already have a busy schedule, travel to work, live or work in remote locations and maybe have mobility issues. The convenience of being in your own home or other suitable location, at a time that suits you, without having to travel to appointments, means online therapy provides a really good solution to access your therapy. CBT is a problem-specific and pragmatic approach that helps you identify your specific problems and then we can work together to give you therapeutic tools and education that leads to long-term results.

I appreciate that it is really hard to seek help when you are not feeling good about yourself or your situation. You feel that you are struggling enough without feeling exposed and vulnerable by sharing your real thoughts with a Therapist but this is why this is the right time for you to seek therapy. I will help you develop more balanced and helpful ways of thinking to improve how you feel about yourself and your overall quality of life.

We will work together in a safe and non-judgemental environment to understand the unhelpful patterns of thoughts and behaviours that might be keeping your difficulties going and trap you in a vicious cycle.

If you want to learn these skills and techniques to change limiting behaviours, negative thinking and beliefs associated with conditions such as anxiety, panic, low self-esteem and depression, then CBT may be the treatment that works best for you and I look forward to supporting you.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have worked for over 25 years in education and accredited learning, including coaching and mentoring, and offer a warm, genuine and compassionate approach and aim to create a non-judgemental, safe space where you can explore challenges and move forward using CBT techniques. In 2013, I initially qualified in Person-Centred Counselling and subsequently qualified in Pluralistic Counselling. I went on to specialise in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy. I also work a couple of days at a Further Education College as a Student Counsellor. I am BABCP Accredited and am a Registered Member of BACP (MBACP). I am on the Professional Standards Authority Register which ensures practitioners have met the Authority's demanding standards including professional education and training.

Formal Qualifications:

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Psychological Therapies (CBT) (Distinction) (The University of Edinburgh)
  • Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (The Institute of Counselling)
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Counselling Studies (Merit) (Abertay University)
  • COSCA Certificate in Counselling (The University of Aberdeen)
  • BSc Pure Science (The University of Aberdeen)

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
