About me

I am an integrative therapeutic counsellor, psychotherapist, and supervisor based in Ivybridge.

I've taken the time to share some thoughts about my own experiences from counselling I received some years ago. It’s important to remember that as individuals we are all unique, and what worked for me may not necessarily work for you, but the following will hopefully provide you with an idea of who I am.

I'm passionate about my own personal development and I love understanding what has made me the person I am today. My own circumstances led me to seek out counselling over ten years ago. Life events had brought me to a place where I had far more questions than I had answers.

I was anxious about counselling at the beginning, and sometimes I found it hard going. Sometimes it was just a safe space for me to talk to someone who was able to listen without judgment. Over time the relationship with my therapist developed and grew; they understood me better, they knew when to challenge me and when to simply be supportive, ultimately I trusted their judgment and respected their view, and this provided the environment for my growth during this time. Our sessions were sometimes light and related to day-to-day events but could also be highly emotional and challenging; it was generally during these times, that I found the answers to my questions.

After the initial period, I found that counselling had become so integral to my life that I kept returning, although the frequency altered. It was always so reassuring to be able to return (to my counsellor) and pick up just where we'd left off, which would often enable me to get straight to work on whatever made me go back. Sometimes there were specific concerns, circumstances, or challenges I needed to deal with, and other times it was just a safe space for me to sit and talk... about whatever I wanted!

I believe that whatever your motivation for change is, ultimately is irrelevant, the fact you’re looking here is the most important part because you’re looking for a change, and this is the beginning for you.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sam

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Additional information

After your initial contact, I will make contact with you for a consultation so you can describe what you would like to work on and what you would like to achieve from working together. During this consultation, you can also ask me questions about my approach to counselling. This consultation will either be over the telephone or online (video call), your choice.

The number of sessions we have will depend on your situation and your needs. Some people only require a small number of sessions over a short period to work on something quite specific, and others will choose sessions over a longer period to work consistently throughout a bigger period of change. There is no fixed term or right or wrong, only what is right for you, and everyone's needs are different.

£60 for a 60-minute appointment. Sessions face-to-face, online, or telephone.
