About me

I am passionate in believing everyone should be able to access counselling to be able to truely understand themselves and their own needs in life. For some they may have tried counselling in the past and found it did not work for them. This can be because the therapeutic relationship was not a good match, or could be due to other barriers in the way, such as the client not being ready to embrace vulnerability.

Vulnerability can feel very uncomfortable, as can really thinking about our own actions and how they can be impacting our lives. Therefore I do not believe in setting an amount of time or sessions, by having less pressure of a deadline it can lead to more openness to explore at your own pace. This could be starting with surface level issues you as the client are experiencing, whilst we build our therapeutic relationship. It is crucial that during the relationship you feel able to express when something I say is not right, this journey is about you.

During counselling we will explore what goals you aim to achieve and work together to remove barriers in your way to achieving these. Barriers getting in the way could be low self esteem, uncertainty due to a chronic illness diagnosis, anxiety, feeling over whelmed.

For some clients looking back into their childhood or earlier years can feel irrelevant, now how about looking at this a different way? Buildings need firm foundations to prevent them from falling down or subsiding over time. They need good materials to build the outside to shelter the inside from weathering and other damage. Your early years of life are your foundations. Now this does not mean that we need to go over every part of your past. However it may be that we need to discover where there are cracks in your foundation to help repair these, to prevent your building from collapsing.

As a person centred counsellor, I firmly believe that every client has the ability to reach their own goals. Sometimes this will be focused solely on the present. Other times curiosity may be needed around your foundations to help us better understand your present life and to fix any cracks that may be appearing.

Clients often state that they put their feelings to one side and put a brave face on for others or help others first and then forget to allow themselves the time to process their own feelings. They comment on feeling like a volcano ready to erupt, as these squashed feelings are bubbling below the surface ready to explode any moment. By coming to counselling this gives you a safe place to let these emotions out, in a contained space each week until you feel like you again, or maybe discover the real you for the first time.

Training, qualifications & experience

Training for me is important as it prevents me from becoming stagnant and helps to open my eyes to many more experiences than my own. Whilst I have a wealth of personal and work experience each client is totally unique and the key to it all is our connection within the therapy space. Most important is that you feel safe and heard without judgement.

I have a Level 5 Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy which led me into person centred therapy as my area of focus. Some clients may wonder if Person Centred Counselling is just someone sitting and listening. However, for me it is about hearing a person and understanding or recognising things they are saying but may not notice or be fully aware of themselves. Further to this by the counsellor being curious about topics a client avoids it can help them to discover parts of their life or personality they may have never explored before. Being Person Centred keeps the client as the focus not others in their life and can really help the client gain clarity about themselves, their coping mechanisms, behaviours and emotions.

I have also completed a variety of CPD (continuous professional development) courses which include:

  • Taming the inner critic with self compassion
  • Autism level 2
  • Children and young people's mental health level 2
  • Working with Shame
  • Adult and Childrens Safeguarding training
  • First aid training
  • Domestic Abuse training
  • Working with relational trauma
  • Introduction to Body Image and Disordered Eating
  • Walk and Talk Therapy
  • Bereaved by suicide training
  • Bereavement training

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
