Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

What Is Counselling?

Counselling is talking therapy. A safe, confidential space where a person can talk about anything that is concerning them free from judgement. It is a space where you can explore all parts of yourself, increasing your capacity for self-care and resilience. Where you can explore your thoughts, feelings and patterns of behaviour so that you can develop a better understanding of yourself.

Counselling is not advice-giving. Counsellors do not give their opinion, diagnose nor prescribe medication. Counselling can be emotionally challenging, but ultimately can be a very rewarding and empowering process where you can work towards more rewarding ways of being.

Counselling is a brave act of self-care.

How Does Counselling Work?

Counsellors carefully listen to what you have to say without judgement. This process enables you to explore what has been said so that you can find your own solutions. These may be in the form of changing your patterns of relating, self-care and capacity for emotional resilience until they become a daily habit which enhances your wellbeing.

How Do I Work?

I do not offer advice or instructions and I do not prescribe medication nor diagnose.

I work in an integrative way. What does this mean? I am trained as a Person-Centred and Psychodynamic counsellor and work combining the two.

Person-centred Counselling -

As a Person-Centred counsellor, I offer a warm, respectful, confidential environment, free from judgement or preconceptions, where clients can safely explore their deepest feelings. I believe clients are the experts of their own lives and experience and are therefore capable of finding their own solutions.

Person-centred counselling focuses on working with your emotions and the collaborative relationship with your counsellor exploring and challenging your values and the different parts of yourself so that you are able to increase your self-esteem, live more congruently and in line with what you deem to be your ideal self.

Psychodynamic Counselling -

As a Psychodynamic counsellor I listen to what you have to say. Working with imagery and dream analysis, exploring your defence mechanisms, making connections with your history, exploring how your past impacts your present and how this impacts your patterns of relating and how this may be holding you back in life.
