About me

When you come to my practice, I will listen to you, support you and reassure you that this is a safe place, your safe space and your place to explore your thoughts and feelings.

Hello, my name is Lorraine Gove. I have been a practicing person-centred counsellor for over 15 years and have gained experience in many aspects of counselling psychotherapy. In addition to my practicing privately, I have worked as a family outreach worker in the community with hard-to-reach families and individuals with particular needs of emotional difficulties. This rewarding role enhanced my understanding of family dynamics and the strains and tribulations that society can place on individuals. This understanding has been extended by my volunteer work with help lines and local community drop-in projects where particular help has been needed to assist individuals with pressing and immediate emotional issues.

All of this experience has reinforced my belief in the importance of offering a safe haven where a client can feel able to talk and hear themselves think and to be able to express emotion. To be effective, this haven should come without constraints and pressures and offer both privacy and comfort. This is the place that I have created in my home for you and is the place where you will be able to explore your feelings, reflect on the past, review the present and where together we will help you move forward with a new understanding and a feeling of self.

The personal counselling service I offer begins with a relaxed 30 minute session, either in person, over the phone or via a video call; whichever you prefer. This session allows us to get to know each other, to determine whether the service I offer meets your particular need and make sure that you feel comfortable with my approach.

This introduction is then typically followed by eight weekly sessions where you will be able to talk freely about the issues that are troubling you and when we can discuss how we can move these on for the following sessions, so that you gain the maximum benefit and move forward. Together, we will close each session with a summary and then commence the next session with a recap before we move on. About the fourth week, we will carry out a review to see how you feel the sessions are going and how we can work together as client and counsellor to improve the experience. These sessions are carried out in my dedicated counselling room where you will be made to feel comfortable and welcome and able to share your thoughts and feelings.

I am a member of the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP). As part of my commitments as a professional counsellor, I hold monthly sessions with a counselling supervisor where I discuss my practice work and review my consultations to make sure that I am acting professionally and within the confines of my appointment. This reflection and discussion allows me to see how I may improve the service I am providing. These sessions are carried out in complete confidence and without express reference to my clients.

I adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions. This commitment underpins my practice and ensures that I put my clients first and treat them all with respect while maintaining my professional integrity . In line with the requirements of the BACP, I maintain public and professional liability insurance so that I remain accountable for the service I provide. The BACP also ensures that I look after my own wellbeing so that I too can feel relaxed and able to offer you a one to one service in safety.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
