About me

Hi, I am a humanistic integrative counsellor offering walk and talk counselling outdoors, online counselling via Zoom/WhatsApp, and telephone counselling. I believe that everyone’s story is unique to them, shaped by their own set of experiences.

Life can sometimes feel challenging, lonely, and full of uncertainties which can often lead us to feel a mixture of thoughts and feelings, some of which we can not always make sense of. This can sometimes lead us to feel out of control and unable to move forward.

However it feels for you and whatever it is that has led you to this point in your life, I want to understand how it is for you. I want to help you find ways to better understand yourself, come to terms with difficult experiences, and make sense of any unhelpful patterns/themes. Then, you can feel better equipped to make choices that are right for you moving forward, so that life can feel lighter and more manageable.

In my counselling relationships I believe deeply in creating a warm close connection between myself and the client so that they feel understood and accepted in a way that enables them to find understanding and acceptance of themselves. In this space, we can sit together with any uncertainties and difficult emotions you may have and begin to gain sight of a clearer, more positive path forward.

How do I work?

As an integrative humanistic counsellor, I can offer the flexibility of therapeutic skills that are unique to you and what you need. My aim is to provide you with a trusting confidential space where you feel safe, supported, and truly heard so that you feel comfortable sharing what is troubling you, whatever it might be.

I will always work to listen to what you need and at a pace that feels comfortable for you, so you feel safe and able to find hope, acceptance and courage to move forward. I look forward to hearing from you so that we can begin this journey together.

What I offer

I offer long or short term, walk and talk counselling outdoors, online counselling via Zoom/WhatsApp, and telephone counselling. I also offer reduced fees for students, those on low income/benefits, and trainee counsellors. **Please note that all my concession spaces are currently full but please do ask if you would like to go on my waiting list.

I offer an initial, free 20 minute Zoom/WhatsApp or telephone session which gives you an opportunity to talk about what has led you to seek counselling and what you are looking to gain from it. It is also a time for you to ask any questions and for me to tell you more about how I might be able to help you. It is really important that you feel comfortable with your therapist. If we both feel that we can work together then we can look to establish a session slot and agree the frequency and number moving forward.

If you are eligible for a concessionary fee please discuss this with me in this session too.

Walk and Talk Counselling

I offer walk and talk close to where I live which is in the YO61 postcode area. Walk and talk comes with the benefits of enjoying the outdoors, getting some exercise whilst accessing counselling at the same time. It is also a good alternative to meeting online giving you the opportunity to see me in person. It may be that working between the two choices would work for you. Please get in touch should this be of interest to you and we can discuss this further.

Why choose Online/telephone counselling.

Clients often worry that this way of working is not as effective as face-to-face therapy however research has suggested that its effectiveness is no different.

Online/telephone counselling offers clients the flexibility in their busy lives to be able to access the support that they need within a comfortable, safe space of their own without the need to travel.

It can also offer flexibility to those clients who work shifts as well as those who work from home.

It offers clients the ability to schedule in more sessions should they be required.

This way of working also means help and support is accessible for people with physical limitations.

Please contact me for more information about counselling and how we might work together.

Training, qualifications & experience

Areas of work and experience

I have many years experience over a wide range of issues some of which include anxiety, depression, grief/loss, relationship problems, domestic abuse, self-esteem and identity issues, eating disorders, self-harm, and PTSD/Trauma.

Alongside my private practice, I volunteer one day a week for a charity in York called 1-2-1 counselling who offer short-term therapy to people in the York area who may otherwise not be able to afford it. This has given me a number of years’ experience working with a range of clients with a complex and diverse range of needs.

Having come from a background of secondary teaching in the early part of my working life, I have always felt passionate about listening, caring, and supporting people so that they feel able to get to a place where they feel secure moving forward. I also feel that my teaching experience has deepened my empathy and understanding of the pressures many people feel within their working roles and the struggles and difficulties that come with balancing work and life expectations.

I am a registered member of the BACP abiding by their ethical framework and maintaining continued professional development.

I hold an enhanced DBS

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
