About me

I am a qualified, person-centred counsellor, and also teach counselling at a Further Education College. I provide a safe, non-judgmental environment to help with your difficulties. I can help with a range of issues including stress, anxiety, panic attacks, family issues, self-worth, and confidence as well as other problems you may have.

Seeking counselling can be overwhelming and scary which is why I want to share a bit about myself and my own journey.

 A bit about me

I have been a hairdresser most of my life and always enjoyed helping to make people feel good about themselves as this was satisfying for me. Alongside this I realised I was a good listener and also interested in people and their lives.

At the age of 39, I studied on a level 3 counselling course which led me to being more self-aware of my own difficulties and the impact they were having on my life, bringing my own problems to light. Following this I asked myself what I really wanted to do with my life, I wasn't sure. All I knew was I wanted to make a positive difference in people's lives somehow.

I began my own personal therapy to help me make more sense of my own struggles that had come to light .The results were fantastic and I was able to begin making sense of my own experiences and behaviours.

Having experienced first-hand how effective counselling is for helping people turn their lives around, I decided to train as a counsellor.

I offer face to face therapy on Mondays during the day and offer online therapy on Monday evenings.

I currently have availability.

Student concessions: £35- I cannot provide therapy for students studying at Leeds City College.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Additional information

I realise that deciding to have counselling and choosing a therapist may be daunting and can feel like a big step. For this reason, I am happy to offer a free 15 minute informal telephone call (or messages/emails if you are more comfortable with this) to answer any questions and help you decide if I am the right counsellor for you.

Following this I would leave the decision with you about whether you want to go ahead with counselling. If you decide to, we would then book in your first session.

In the first session we would go over our agreement about how we will work together, talk about what you would like from counselling and begin to look at what you want to work on, always going at your pace and at a level you feel comfortable with.

Whether you choose ongoing or short term counselling, you are not committed to a specific number of sessions and are free to leave counselling whenever you choose.

Further information

My counselling approach is person-centred counselling. In summary, this is a non-directive approach which aims to put you in control of your therapy and healing. When working with you using this approach, I will support you, rather than direct you, as you work through any issues, and find ways to cope with or overcome them. Supporting you rather than directing helps give you autonomy and empower you and this can be helpful in the future once you choose to finish therapy.

While person-centred counselling does not involve advice giving, it is definitely not a passive form of counselling. I will be fully involved in the process with you, helping you clarify and make sense of things that are troubling you. I can give you a safe and confidential space where you will be listened to respectfully and empathised with. Your thoughts and feelings will always be heard and never be judged.
