About me
Compassion, collaboration and kindness are at the heart of my counselling practice. I offer a supportive space to explore issues including grief, loss, identity and major life changes, where your true self will always be welcomed.
How I work
I believe counselling shouldn't be one-size-fits-all: I will work together with you to find out how best to support you. To me all counselling should be teamwork, I’m not here to tell you how to change your life - I’m here to create a safe, supportive space where you can find out what changes you want to make.
I am a humanistic, integrative psychotherapeutic counsellor. That means I value every person as a whole, unique self and believe in working together with them to improve their lives. I use a range of different therapeutic tools and approaches, depending on the needs of each client.
I am particularly experienced in helping people cope with grief, loss and major life changes. Whether you’re grieving the death of a loved one or the end of a relationship; adjusting to a new way of life or coping with ill health, you deserve time and space to process and adjust to a new reality.
I also enjoy working with issues of identity, working with you to explore who you are, who you want to be, and how you can live authentically and happily. I've undertaken extra training in gender, sexual and relationship diversity, to help me offer the best possible support to all clients, including queer clients and those in non-monogamous or non-traditional relationships.
Although I believe we all have the tools to make positive changes in our lives, I also know we live in a society that makes life harder for many people, simply because of who they are or where they're from - I’m always open to exploring the impact of cultural, societal and political factors on your life, to listening, learning and respecting your experience.
What to expect
Whether you're nervous about reaching out for help or excited to take the first step, it can help to know what to expect from counselling. If you think you'd like to work with me, the first time we meet, I'll ask questions about you to get a better understanding of who you are and what you want to change, and you can ask questions about my experience and how I work.
After that, sessions will be different for every person, but we'll usually agree on goals to work on together, based on what you want to change in your life. We'll generally spend most of our sessions talking, often exploring your feelings and making connections between the past and the present. For clients who are interested, I can also bring creative methods into our work, including imagery, metaphor, visualisation, drawing and other visual arts, working with figurines etc.
Training, qualifications & experience
I am a BACP registered psychotherapeutic counsellor, with two years experience practicing counselling within an NHS GP surgery. During this time I worked with a wide variety of issues including grief, loss of health, depression, anxiety, family estrangement, trauma and recovery from abuse.
I hold a BACP accredited diploma in psychotherapeutic counselling from Northern Guild Psychotherapy and Counselling. My training involved over 500 contact hours, and featured regular supervision and personal therapy.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).
Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.
Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.
All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
