About me

It can be challenging when feeling stuck or in crisis to take the first step and ask for help, but once that step has been taken a journey of positive growth with new potential can begin.

I believe that, with the right support, a difficult situation or crisis holds the potential to become an opportunity - which can lead to a positive, if not exciting, journey of self-understanding and discovery.

I believe, and have experienced countless times in my work as a counsellor over two decades, that no matter how insurmountable problems might seem at a moment in time, counselling can affect a shift in self-understanding and perspective that helps us regain a sense of control and freedom in situations which initially seemed overwhelming.

I warmly invite you to get in touch to discuss your situation which I will respond to with sensitivity and respect.

Training, qualifications & experience

I graduated as a Person-Centred Counsellor in 1999 at Edinburgh University and am a member of the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP).

I have over 30 years of in-depth experience of supporting, enabling and empowering young people and adults through challenge, enabling a positive process of self-discovery, increased self-awareness, confidence, agency and personal growth.

My clients come from a vast variety of backgrounds, including people experiencing homelessness, parents and sons/daughters with difficult relationships, single parent families, people with a criminal record, young adults struggling to make the transition to university, people facing life threatening illnesses and many more.

I am married and am the father of two teenage sons.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I have a special interest and ability in helping parents and their children (teenagers and young adults ) to overcome conflict and build healthy and strong relationships, and in empowering teenagers to become independent, well-balanced and confident young adults.

I believe there is a lack of positive role models in particular for adolescent boys & young men in our society. As a strong and positive role model I have the ability to guide boys & young men through complicated times, enabling them to develop confidence, a positive male identity and to find their place in society.
