About me

Hello, I am a qualified and professional counsellor and psychotherapist based in central Derby. I offer a relational approach and I am committed to meeting you with the warmth, genuineness, compassion and respect that’s needed to work with and explore our challenging or painful feelings.

I offer psychotherapy and counselling for adults over 18 on both short-term and longer-term basis, depending on the client goals and or issues being brought.

We can all need support at times in our life, and there are all sorts of different reasons people may seek it, from coping with traumatic events and experiences, dealing with anxiety and depression or managing harmful behaviours and emotions, to coping with physical health conditions. Though it can be very difficult to actually reach out and seek professional support - and it takes wisdom, strength and courage to do so - you have already taken a huge step by visiting this page!

Maybe there is a specific past or present issue, or you are in a particular difficult period of your life, and feeling stuck, hopeless or powerless to know how best to move forward. Or maybe it’s less clear, and you just have a vague sense that something is just not right.

Whatever it is, I would like to support you to work through your difficulties and find the best way forward for you. I will work with you to explore and make sense of your thoughts, feelings and behaviour and help develop your own resources.

What’s the next step?

Contact me by clicking the button at the bottom of this page to email, by phone or via my website listed above - We can then arrange an initial assessment appointment if appropriate.  I know it can be very daunting to make that first call or contact, and you may feel perhaps your issue is too small or too big, but I will try my best to help make it as comfortable as possible.

The initial assessment is an opportunity for us to meet, for me to gain a little understanding about your history and gain a fuller picture of the issues you would like help with and for us to explore how Psychotherapy may help you. And it allows for us both to check our suitability, ie for you to check you feel comfortable for us to work together, which is especially key, given the importance of the therapeutic relationship.  And for me to check I am the right therapist to help you.

If so, we will agree a working contract which would include session times, fees, cancellation policy etc, and then arrange for regular sessions.

Training, qualifications & experience

  • Pg Dip Person-Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy (Level 7), Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute, Nottingham via Coventry University.
  • BA Combined Studies, Healing Arts, Derby University.

I am a registered member (MBACP) of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and I practice according to the codes of ethics of this professional organisation, and am subject to their complaints procedure.

I completed my formal and rigorous Psychotherapy training at the Sherwood Institute, commencing my clinical work in 2012 working as a volunteer counsellor for Women’s centres, supporting some of the most vulnerable clients. Prior to this I had almost 20 years of immersion in the field of psychology and psychotherapy, with long breaks and interruptions due to chronic health conditions. This was via a combination of studies, rigorous self-development, research and personal therapy, and before commencing my formal professional training in 2010. I was originally drawn to this field to make sense of, heal and develop from my own adverse life experiences and traumas and I persistently worked my way through the different approaches to psychology and psychotherapy in this endeavour.

My clinical work is regularly supervised accordingly, and I participate in ongoing continuing professional development including the therapeutic use of Mindfulness, emotional abuse and neglect, shame, anger, dissociation and the Psychophysiology of PTSD and Trauma.

I hold full professional indemnity insurance.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I have a special interest in supporting clients in the areas of chronic pain and chronic health conditions including chronic migraine, cluster headaches, fibromyalgia etc, side effects, impacts of treatments and living with chronic conditions resulting from medical negligence or medical malpractice.  This is inspired by my own experience of living with and managing numerous chronic pain conditions for almost two decades, alongside researching the field.
