About me
I am a qualified therapeutic counsellor providing individual counselling where you are at the heart of our work. I provide counselling in-person in York, or for those further afield, I offer online/telephone/email sessions as appropriate.
You may be struggling with others' or your own expectations of you, or reflecting - wondering about your values and priorities, what really matters to you. You may feel at a point of crisis or of needing to make changes. Any of these can evoke feelings of anxiety, which comes in many shapes and sizes, and can feel crippling if allowed to take hold.
Whatever may be drawing you towards counselling, I provide a safe space for you to show up, exactly as you are, without fear of judgment, so that together we can start to make sense of what’s holding you back from what you really want and need.
I work with those dealing with neurodivergent assessment and identity, grief & loss, life transitions especially for older individuals, anxiety, low self-esteem, transgender and non-binary challenges, and more.
I have worked with an increasing number of clients addressing the impact of autism, ADHD, or AuDHD - either their own or that of individuals close to them. I have also worked with transgender and non-binary clients as they explore their identity in the widest sense, as well as with the emotional struggles and practical challenges facing them.
The quotes below are from past clients who have worked with me across a range of different issues.
“There is something profound about finding someone capable of supporting you by giving permission to be yourself genuinely and guide you through your issues. I have ADHD and autism, her affable, easy and inquisitive nature allowed me to nurture a sense of safety and non-judgement which benefited our sessions greatly.”
‘’My time with Dorothy has been invaluable. She has a remarkable ability to listen deeply and help me explore my thoughts and feelings at my own pace. Her observations are always gentle but incredibly insightful, and she offers practical tools that have genuinely improved my wellbeing.
Dorothy brings the perfect blend of professionalism and warmth into every session. She remembers the details that matter, asks thoughtful questions, and creates an environment where I always feel heard and respected. I’m truly grateful for the progress I’ve made with her and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her to anyone seeking meaningful, supportive therapy.’’
“The sessions I've had have really helped me, at an awful time in my life, and although I'm not out of the woods, I feel much stronger and able to cope. Thank you so much for that Dorothy, you are great at what you do.”
"It took me a while to work up the courage to get therapy, but from the initial session Dorothy was so patient with me, and gave me the time to work through everything I needed to. I felt like Dorothy gave me the time and space to fully come to terms with things, which has really helped me in both my personal and professional life. I really benefitted from Dorothy's help and support"
“I approached Dorothy for support with a very upsetting family situation. Dorothy provided a very safe compassionate space where I could explore strategies and coping mechanisms to deal with the situation and come to terms with other people’s behaviour. I felt very supported and held, she has a very non-judgemental, warm approach and I would highly recommend her.”
"I was fortunate to be able to spend six months having initially weekly sessions with Dorothy. I decided to have counselling as I was suffering from frequent and lasting low moods where I could no longer take joy from things I liked doing. I was also experiencing unhappiness in my marriage and trying to cope with the emotional upset resulting from coping with an elder sister with Alzheimer’s amongst other things. My sessions with Dorothy have made a real difference to me as I have been able to discuss and explore the things that have been causing me pain both immediate and also historic such as losing a parent while I was relatively young. She is a very sympathetic and supportive person to talk to and she has given me a range of different ideas and techniques to use going forward. I am now in a much better place both mentally and emotionally with my incidents of feeling low far less frequent and of much shorter duration (from hours to minutes). I was sad to stop my counselling sessions with Dorothy. It was my choice but I know that if necessary I can take it up again with her."
If you think you would benefit from some time set aside for you, why not get in touch to book an initial, free consultation and consider whether counselling might give you the time and space you need?
I have availability currently for weekly or fortnightly sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays, including in-person, online (via Zoom), telephone or email counselling.

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
The National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society This Not For Profit association of counsellors and psychotherapists aim to support the counselling profession, members and training organisations. In 2013 the NCS register was accredited by the Professional Standards Authority under the Accredited Voluntary Register Scheme. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Further information
I provide a neurodivergent-affirming service, working with an increasing number of clients impacted by assessment or self-identification of autism/ADHD/AuDHD/other neurodivergent traits, either their own or those of family members. I offer a safe, confidential space for those either exploring their own sense of neurodivergence or the impacts of living with family members who present with neurodivergent traits.
I also offer a safe, confidential space for those exploring their gender identity and/or addressing some of the varied challenges that can arise from this. I have previously worked with transgender, non-binary and intersex individuals by facilitating an online support group as well as providing independent, individual advocacy. I have delivered trans-awareness training to yearly cohorts of local trainee counsellors over several years, and have given this presentation to my local Samaritans and a local counselling charity. Every time I have delivered this, more allies have been won over in support of transgender individuals. One attendee said the presentation had convinced her to train as a counsellor herself so that she could provide more support to the transgender community.
I have also delivered workshops on working with life-restricting conditions and understanding some of the impacts of working with later diagnosed neurodivergence. I have recorded lectures on all these topics with Counselling Tutor as part of their CPD library for qualified counsellors.
