About me

I am a qualified therapeutic counsellor providing individual counselling in-person in York or online/telephone sessions as needed. I work from a person-centred perspective - putting you, the client, at the heart of our work.

You may be struggling with others' or your own expectations, and reflecting - wondering about your values and priorities, what really matters to you.  You may feel at a point of crisis or of needing to make changes.  Whatever it may be for you, I provide a safe, brave space for you to show up, exactly as you are, without fear of judgement, so that together we can start to make sense of what’s holding you back from what you really want and need.

I work with relationship difficulties, grief & loss, anxiety, low self-esteem, neurodivergent challenges, family issues, transgender challenges and much more. I have worked with an increasing number of clients addressing the impact of autism and/or ADHD, either their own or that of individuals close to them. I have also worked with transgender clients as they explore their identity in the widest sense, but also with the emotional struggles and practical challenges facing them.

I work with clients experiencing challenges within their personal and intimate relationships:

“The sessions I've had have really helped me, at an awful time in my life, and although I'm not out of the woods, I feel much stronger and able to cope.  Thank you so much for that Dorothy, you are great at what you do.”

I work with clients who are addressing the impact of neurodivergent assessment and/or diagnosis amid other personal challenges:

“Speaking to Dorothy really has been a joy. She offers an interpersonal relationship as a foundation for growth ... There is something profound about finding someone capable of supporting you by giving permission to be yourself genuinely and guide you through your issues. I have ADHD and autism, her affable, easy and inquisitive nature allowed me to nurture a sense of safety and non judgment which benefited our sessions greatly. I look forward to speaking to Dorothy in the future, for future guidance and support. A wonderful human to speak to, thank you.”

I have worked with individuals struggling with chronic social anxiety, depression and other mental health challenges:

“At first, I was very anxious about attending as I have worked with other therapists in the past and found them not to be very helpful. As I began to attend more of the sessions and build a rapport with Dorothy I started to learn things about myself and felt comfortable opening up to her as she seemed to listen and understand me. I never felt judged or uncomfortable and started to enjoy the sessions more as they went on as I felt I could trust Dorothy and unload what was on my mind. I can highly recommend Dorothy and can honestly say is one of the most beautiful, understanding, and helpful people I have ever met.”

One client noted in our last session together that I had given them the gift of understanding that living with uncertainty was OK. So many clients come with a powerful need for certainty at the start of counselling, but as we work together they discover that they are capable of living with uncertainty – something essential in the unpredictability of modern life.

If you think you would benefit from some time set aside for you why not get in touch to book an intial, free consultation and consider whether counselling might give you the time and space you need?

I have availability currently for weekly or fortnightly on Mondays and Wednesdays,  including in-person, online (via Zoom), telephone or email counselling.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

I provide a neurodivergent-affirming service, working with an increasing number of clients impacted by assessment or self-identifying, either their own or that of family members.  I offer a safe, confidential space for those either exploring their own sense of neurodivergence or the impacts of living with family members who present with neurodivergent traits.

I also offer a safe, confidential space for those exploring their gendered identity and/or addressing any of the varied challenges that can arise from this.   I have previously worked with transgender, non-binary and intersex individuals by facilitating an online support group as well as providing independent, individual advocacy.   I have delivered trans-awareness training to several year groups of local trainee counsellors as well as to our local Samaritans and a local counselling charity.  Every time I have delivered this more allies have been won over in support of transgender individuals.  One attendee said the presentation had convinced her to train as a counsellor herself so that she could provide more support to the transgender community.

I have also delivered workshops on working with life restricting conditions and understanding some of the impacts of working with later diagnosed neurodivergence.
