About me

Hi, I'm Catherine, I am a qualified integrative counsellor, specialising in working with children and young people. I am experienced in working with a wide range of emotional and behavioural difficulties. I offer a friendly, safe and non- judgmental space for children and adolescents to explore their feelings.

How I work

While my approach to counselling is both creative and integrative in nature, I also draw on the strengths of various other counselling approaches including attachment theory, person-centred, psychodynamic, systemic, and play therapy.

My practice is child-led and, with the use of verbal and non - verbal communication, creative materials and play, children and adolescents can work through and express their feelings. By ‘child-led’, I refer to the fact that my sessions are at the child’s pace and tailored to each individual need. Together, we might look at early interactions and explore unconscious feelings, while also focusing on what’s going on in the present moment.

I understand that it can be extremely worrying for a parent to see a child suffering with their mental health. Taking the first step and making contact with a counsellor can be quite daunting. Often, having that ‘listening ear’ and someone to talk to can really lessen the weight of the load that they carry - not just for the child but for their parents too

Training, qualifications & experience

I completed a two-year BACP accredited Post Graduate Diploma training course with Place2Be (a leading provider of support for children’s mental health) and in collaboration with University of East London.

Prior to this, I taught music in primary schools for many years, having completed my undergraduate degree in music at the University of Hull. Through my work as a teacher, I have gained a strong understanding of the personal, social, emotional and educational concerns of young people.

I am fully insured and also registered with the Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) and hold an enhanced DBS check

I am a registered member of the BACP.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
